E3 2014

With such a large influx of news coming in during E3, it’s a bit difficult to keep track of it all. Thus, here’s a handy guide to all of this year’s biggest announcements.

Good lord that is a lot, this E3 had a lot of content. Thanks again @salromano:disqus for all the coverage

  • TheBlackRabbit

rip sal lol. thanks for the effort.

    • jujubee88

Is he (or She?) actually at E3? If so, double RIP.

  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Must’ve taken awhile to get this put together, appreciate it

  • Budgiecat

So here are my picks of interest so far:

    Microsoft

(gonna ignore their obvious moneyhatting an focus on exclusives):

Sunset Overdrive (nice use of vibrant colors and feels like R&C meets Infamous)
Scalebound (Platinum game so could be fun; hopefully Donte clone is a placeholder and you can create a character or something)
Phantom Dust (love the original; it, Breakdown, and Shenmue II are the only XBox titles I still play. Hopefully the remake does it justic. CGI teaser trailer looked cool but a little cautious since character models looked…strangely Westernized…)

    Sony:
    (same as above)

Bloodborne (awesome mood & atmosphere. I know they ‘not a Souls game’ but…)
Deep Down (Has Capcom officially announced localization or are they still in troll mode? Looks good but still wary because it’s F2P & lol Capcom)
the Order 1886 (still one of my most anticipated PS4 titles nothings changed)
PS Vita tv (not a game but still glad its coming over. was getting worried)
Rachet & Clank remake & movie (could be interesting)
    Drive Club (still interested)
    Kingdom under Fire II (badass)

    Nintendo:

Bayonetta 2 (diggin the short hair and nice that they included 1st game)
    Captain toad (looks cool actually)
Legend of Zelda (open world Zelda nuff said)
Xenoblade Chronicles X (more Xenoblade is not a bad thing. Psyched)
Hyrule Warriors (looks pretty fun actually…still…I’d rather Fire Emblem)
Pokemon Omega Ruby & Sapphire (I might actually get a Pokemon game now)
Super Smash (didn’t really show much (didn’t care for Mii’s) but it’s stilll Smash)

    3rd party:

    No Man’s Sky (breathtaking)
Ass Creed Unity (never got into these games but damn did that look good. Loved the riot crowds. Hopefully not a bullshot)
Batman Arkham Knight (same as above but can’t deny this looked good)
Metal Gear Solid V (chilling trailer)
    Alien Isolation still looks promising
the Division (still a highly anticipated title)
Final Fantasy type Zero HD (finally its coming over! (a day after the fan sub PSP drop lol) but no Vita version or trailer?)
Still psyched for Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign
    Witcher 3 still looks sick
    EA UFC – Bruce Lee….
Dragonball Z Xenobirth actually looks like a good DBZ game (might bring me back to them seeing as how I have been burnt out on em)
Never a big fan of MK but MK X does look quite impressive
Not really a fan of FPS but Far Cry 4 and Battlefield Hardline actually look pretty crazy

    On the fence (but curious):
    Dragon Age Inquisition
    Lords of the Fallen
    Fable Legends
    Shadow of Mordor

    Disappointments:

No FF XV, KH III info (but we knew this)
No Dragon Quest VII 3DS/DQ X
    No Sleeping Dogs 2
No Shenmue HD Collection/Shenmue III (wishful thinking)
    No Yakuza 5/Ishin localizations (same)
No Sengoku Basara 4 localization (I know I’m overreaching)
No Resident Evil 7 info (but then again…lol Capcom)
No Phantasy Star Online & Omega localization info (except for a random tweet)
Lily Bergamo transforming into Let it Die (How?? And how so soon?)
Devil’s third (Horrible MC, awkward mechanics and animation which is weird considering how long its been in development and the pedigree from which it comes from (Itagaki). Still might be some hope but meh…
No Shulk or Zael or Wonder Red or Bayonetta in Smash…
No Star Fox footage (or those 2 other new Miyamoto games)
Rainbow Six (seemed worse to me than the original trailer…)
Last of Us Remastered (not double dipping just for slight graphic enhancements. Improve the A.I. like you originally promised for the PS3 version)

    too early:
Mirror’s Edge (seemed too much like the original. Needs more work)
    Mass Effect (just concept shots)
Rise of the tomb Raider (need to see gameplay footage)
    Star Wars Battlefront (same)
    Uncharted 4 (no gameplay footage)

    • shogunknight

      Pretty much everything i agree

    • McPoo

I never understood the complaints about “moneyhatting”.

What’s the difference between paying for timed exclusivity (of a game or DLC), and paying for full exclusivity of a game? It’s just varying levels to try and ensure your console is as attractive to the market as possible.

Not every project can be a Sunset Overdrive, Deep Down or Bayonetta 2, getting games launching first on your console, DLC first on your console, or exclusive missions for your console are smaller ways to give you the edge.

      • Budgiecat

It’s shady because they present it in a way that makes it appear like its an exclusive or ‘better’ on our system’

        • McPoo

It is though, in a way. Assassins Creed could be seen as better on PS3 as opposed to 360, because you get an hours extra content.

You may opt to buy PvZ: GW on Xbox One because you know you’ll be getting it months before other platforms.

I don’t see how it’s shady, it’s just using small incentives to get people to buy your game, or your version of a game.

  • Six

    Lots of good stuff.

    Halo: The Master Chief Collection
    Halo 5 beta
    Sunset Overdrive
    Phantom Dust
    Scalebound
    Bloodborne
    More Vita indie games
    Final Fantasy Type 0 HD
    The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
    Teaser for the new Doom
    Mortal Kombat X
    Rise of the Tomb Raider
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
    Batman Arkham Knight
    Far Cry 4
    Hyrule Warriors
    Legend of Zelda Wii U
Bayonetta 2 including the first game
Devil’s Third being alive (but looking like it needs waaay more time in the oven)

    • Budgiecat

on an old side note, what do people not like in Anarchy Reigns?

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojmLLqYgirc

Cause now Devil’s third is reminding me of it

      • Six

I never played much of it online (mostly because the community wasn’t so much dead as it never existed), but I’ve heard it wasn’t balanced very well. Or at all.

Devil’s Third should be much easier to balance though.

        • Budgiecat

          How was Guilty Gear Overture?

And you ever played Spawn: In the Demon’s Hand for Dreamcast/Arcade?

          • Six

You mean Overture? I never played it, but it didn’t review very well.

            • Budgiecat

yeah that. I have it but I barely played it (and have no XBLA; have a launch 360 no modem). Gameplay seemed confusing…

              How bout Spawn?

              • Six

I’m not familiar with that game.

                • Budgiecat

                  *profound sadness*

You really need to get a DC…..

        • Ghost Doge

The online for Anarchy Reigns was fucking awful. I got the game in the mail two days after it released and after a quick intro on the combat in SP, I checked out Multiplayer. Tried 4v4, I was always matched with other low levels (highest I got on my team was 8), ALWAYS matched against a stacked team of four lvl 50 dudes.

But that was just the start. When I actually managed to hit someone, my strongest attacks barely chipped away at their health while their lightest jab was enough to drop me in about 4 hits.

Then there was the little burst that every character could perform (push enemies away, break a combo, give a little breathing room, so on so forth). I land one jab, BURST, sent flying and by the time my character decides to get up I’m already locked into some near infinite combo. I burst while in said combo, enemy goes lolthefuckwasthat and keeps tearing me apart.

So then I tried 1v1 in hopes of catching a little break on the high levels. Nope. Level 2? Yeah, you’re ready. Here’s a level 50. All those low levels you saw earlier? Nah, you were imagining things. Alright, so level 2 vs level 50, no big deal, can’t be all that bad.

Except the fact that I do 10 damage on a solid hit but take 100 while guarding. I literally lost most of my fights without ever taking a single direct hit. Everything was guard damage >.>

All in all, my experience with the online portion was….. Terrible :D

          • Budgiecat

well I was about to get it because Bayonetta…

            but I got MGR instead : /

            • Ghost Doge

They’re both really fun games. Just the online in AR can go fuck itself >.> And unfortunately Bayonetta isn’t available in offline if I recall correctly, so that’s kinda a loss. Don’t quote me on that though since there might’ve been some offline vs mode that I just don’t remember at the moment :P

              • Budgiecat

                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PxOM9svHUU

                seems like offline mission modes..

                • Ghost Doge

I remember playing that as part of the story, but I don’t recall ever getting a character choice. Maybe you unlock the ability to pick different characters after you’ve beaten the game in a certain way since I cleared the story once, but I know there was at least one more side for a full completion.

                  • Budgiecat

                    I see…

                  • kirby755

It’s available if you choose chapter select.

                • LordKaiser

Manliness level up! (Talking about that game, not Bayo)

              • $1392518

She is usable offline at the same capacity as everyone else. Practice battles and SP level select.

Too bad platinum couldnt balance it out even after 2(I think) years of delays

      • PrinceHeir

Amazing game, but it got boring quickly :(

Maybe because of the limited moves and focus on environmental attacks.

I was expecting Bayonetta’s movelist in an arena style(that would have been Godly)

Not to mention the game was delayed 1 FULL YEAR even though the Japanese version had the English script selectable in the options menu.

Thanks Sega US/EU!!! Really classy move you did there.

  • 罪罰

I was delighted with all that Nintendo showed, fun videogames that I can play with my friends and family and also experiences that are only for me. Every single game peaked my interest and what’s to come also looks promising.

  • Samsara09

Some weeks ago,I said this E3 would be trash, irrelevant.I must give my most hearty apologies. This E3 was a smashing success, thanks in no small part to Nintendo and Square Enix….
And good gracious,Sir Sal,you did a superb job in not only keeping up the pace, but also in posting all the trailers like this.Get some rest this weekend, lol.

    • Budgiecat

Wait are you congratulating S-E & Nintendo, or bashing em?

S-E pulled through with FF type Zero HD (though no Vita version as heavily requested, and no trailer), and a tomb Raider sequel (though no gameplay footage), but they offered little else:

      No FF XV footage
      No KH III footage
      No Dragonquest VII 3DS/DQM 3DS/DQ X localizations
      No Sleeping Dogs triad Wars
      Was Hitman shown?
      No new Deus Ex
FF VII smartphone temple run clone game lol
      theaterhythm meh
Who the hell cares about Nosgoth

      • Six

        That Tomb Raider sequel though.

        http://i.imgur.com/KAIb1.gif

But I really thought either Deus Ex or Sleeping Dogs would have been there. Hopefully at Gamescom.

        • Charlottes Guradian

          +1 for the gif.

      • Samsara09

Bash?I am too refined to waste my precious time with futile issues such as these you posted.

besides,if SE really wants to show KH3 and XV,they don’t need to restrict themselves to an event like E3 or TGS.They can release info on famitsu, jump, etc, any day they please.

        Also,Type 0 is more than enough,we even got a PS4 version.

        • Budgiecat

So which one was it my gentlemanly sophisticated and dignified esteemed colleague?

          • Samsara09

just kidding.WellLet’s seeeeeee….Honestly,I could care less for any of those games.Just getting Type 0 is more than enough for me!
Now we have three top notch Square Enix rpgs coming to the PS4!

            • Zackasaur

In addition to already having FFXIV, which keeps getting new content. =3=

SE have some amazing momentum on PS4. I just wish we got more from them on Vita.

      • Elvick

TR2 was announced in development ages ago though.

        • Budgiecat

          okaaay

  • kirby755

Their is so much hype in this video its hilarious. Dat match Announcer tho.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZszrtCIDxU

    • Budgiecat

that pic just makes me hope you can pick those other Megamen skins…

      • kirby755

So much hope that hurts lol.

        • Budgiecat

like being thrown into a black hole lol

  • Slickyslacker

    Dragon Quest…please…

  • PrinceHeir

Thanks Sal for compiling all these in one post :)

  • AdamBoy64

Thanks for compiling the list, Sal.

    I think it’s been a really good E3.

I liked a lot of the announcements from Nintendo’s E3, the Playstation TV getting localised, and I thought Microsoft had a really good showing of games too.

Pretty interested in FF Type-0 as well.

  • uhawww

Damn good E3. Solid presentations and announcements all around. Will be a more than interesting lead up to Gamescom and TGS.

    • Zackasaur

I know Sony will have a good presence at both of those (their strategy has been to appeal to each region through its own conference), but I wonder about the other two this year.

      • Six

Microsoft so far has only confirmed Quantum Bream for Gamesom, but they’ve been hyping up TGS a bit.

  • The Moeshit

    Good E3 as a whole.

Sony’s conference was absolute disaster, though.

    • AdamBoy64

Not enough games for your liking?

      • 罪罰

        what games

        • jujubee88

Bloodborne and LBP3 stick out to me. Makes me want to do something stupid like spend 400 bucks I don’t have.

        • Zackasaur

Sal has a handy list for you. :3

    • Six

I wouldn’t go that far, but that part in the middle really kneecapped it.

    • MadokaXHomura

What,i found MS to be disaster none of those game were interesting imo however i found all of Nintendo games interesting i am definitely going to buy all of those nintendo games and half of Sony and Third party games for Ps4.

      • Budgiecat

Not even Phantom Dust, Sunset Overdrive, Cuphead, D4 and Scalebound??

        • Zackasaur

Only the second of those interests me at all right now, but maybe the first will catch my eye when it actually materialises. lol

          • Budgiecat

Cuphead looks amazing though…..like an old 40’s cartoon come to life

        • MadokaXHomura

Actually i do like D4 and Scalebound but its not going to make me buy XboxOne just for two games,i own Xbox360 and the few of the japanese games i have SO4,Tales of Vesperia,Idolmaster 2, Steins;Gate and GalGun were all later release on ps3 with more content of which i rebought IM2 and ToV on ps3(which makes me feel like there was no need for me to buy 360) .i dont want XboxOne is because im a huge jrpgs or other japanese games fan, there were barely any japanese games on 360 so i doubt there be many on One as much as Ps3,Psvita,Ps4,3DS,and Wii U.

P.S. that does not mean i hate western games i have quite lot of those too.i dont want anyone jumping to conclusion that i hate western games or something.

    • Zackasaur

      wat

You must have teleported to 2006. They had my favourite conference this year, closely followed by Nintendo (merely a matter of game preferences).

  • Six

Well, with E3 just about done, it’s on to the next events.

Quakecon and Comic Con next month, Gamescom in August, and TGS in September.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

There’s still a day left. Hoping Nintendo shares more Zelda info on its stream tomorrow.

      • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Any news on if Destiny will support PS3/PS4 crossplay?

    • Budgiecat

      When’s G-Con

  • Locksus

I thought this year’s E3 was a mediocre one up until NDE, which I thought was fantastic. I was gladly surprised to see MS focus on games, even though they mostly showed cinematic trailers.
I did not watch Sony’s conference, but it was kind of a mixed bag. Bloodborne was by far the most interesting title, but unfortunately we haven’t seen much gameplay.

  • Max Eisenhardt

Thanks for all the hard work Sal !

  • DarthBrian

G-d bless Aaron Webber for doin’ G-d’s work on the GameSpot live show selling the shit out of Hatsune Miku Project Diva F 2nd to a bunch of shooter fans!

    http://www.gamespot.com/videos/e3-2014-hatsune-miku-project-diva-2nd-stage-demo/2300-6419645/

    I love you, man!!! You’re the best!!! <3 <3 <3

  • Charlottes Guradian

For me personally this was the best E3 ever. There are just so many things I’m excited for. The next generation of gaming is just amazing to me. Such an amazing time to be a gamer.

Something fun my friend and I do, is create a “Coming soon/next gen” hype bracket tournament style. Put random games you’re excited for against each other and see what comes out. Here’s how my bracket went:

    http://challonge.com/j3itmla0

Hope everyone had a good E3!

EDIT: uhm, don’t mind some of the foul language used to name the games, I did not write this up, my friend wrote mine and I wrote his. lol

    • Budgiecat

      I still have E3 1999 on VHS somewhere….

      • Charlottes Guradian

        Lol I was only 6!

I couldn’t comprehend amazingness back then.

  • Roger

So, besides eshop titles, Fantasy Life/Smash Bros./Persona Q/Pokémon/Story of Seasons/Harvest Moon:Lost Valley/Theatrhythm are the upcoming 3DS titles for the next months? (and S.T.E.A.M without a release date/window)
Hopefully we’ll have a Nintendo Direct focused in non-announced games soon…

    • Zackasaur

Nintendo sort of unleashed their ammo on E3. Don’t expect too much more stuff.

  • http://psnprofiles.com/AbbaZaba23 Bangarang

This is why I love Gematsu.

  • Six

This news has got me all hot and bothered. The demo of The Witcher 3 played during MS’s conference was running on an Xbone.

    http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=115834382&postcount=2692

It already looks that good, on the weakest platform. It’s gonna be a gorgeous game on both consoles.

  • Six
    • AdamBoy64

Hmm – that is interesting news. I learnt a few things from that page.

“So we’re currently in talks with Microsoft, trying to convince them that this is what needs to happen.”

      • Elvick

That’s what they did originally too… and that failed. :

        • Six

With the new leadership, I’m somewhat optimistic this time. In any case, I just sent Phil Spencer a tweet about it. :P

    • Zackasaur

SE have been saying that for a few years, but MS’ s backwards policies have repeatedly prevented it.

But maybe SE will break MS one day. I’m sure the game would pick up a small player boost that way.

      • Budgiecat

they should focus more on bringing over DQ VII 3DS, both DQM 3DS games, DQ X (offline) and FF type Zero Vita version …

        • Six

No, they should probably focus on finishing… what was it… oh yeah.

          Final Fantasy XV.

          • Budgiecat

but those games are complete; Nomura’s team has nothing to do with them. they just need to get off their butts and localize em…

            • Six

Or try to get Nintendo and Sony to deal with it. :P

              • Budgiecat

Well Sony has no handle on em cause they’re Nintendo games but yeah…..

                • Six

You mentioned a Vita version of Type 0 though. Sony has done ports of third-party games to Vita like Epic Mickey 2 and Borderlands 2, so it’s possible.

                  • Budgiecat

                    ah you’re right..

          • Zackasaur

FFXV development has nothing else hampering it.

Budgie just wants more finished games to get localised. :P

  • jujubee88

I’ve already got my Playstation TV pre-ordered. YES!

    • Zackasaur

Score! Looks like a killer value.

      • jujubee88

Considering I got my VITA for $250 awhile back, it is.

I’m getting this to play my games, media, and some homebrew on the TV. Really stoked for this to come out already. ^^

  • Budgiecat

      Quantum Break

      • Budgiecat

I thought they showed it? Or talked about it?

        • http://lfdn.deviantart.com/ CosmicNova

Nope. Not even a trailer was shown.

  • Budgiecat

After Bloodborne, I think FromSoftware should make 3 games:

    A PS4 tenchu

    A PS4 A.C.E. game

    A Vampire Hunter D game

    • Zackasaur

Nope, they’ll make an expansion, a spiritual successor, and/or a sequel to Bloodborne.

This project is basically their baby, given Souls success.

    • Six

I think Dark Souls 3 and another Front Mission are more likely.

      • Orichalon Hades

i just want another SRPG Front Mission.

        OR

a really good single player, sandbox front mission.

    • shogunknight

If i could give 2 thumbs up for this statement i would have

  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Overall very solid E3 for me

  • Orichalon Hades

hold the phone. Project Diva F 2nd is on E3?
does this means incoming Western Release?

    • Six

It was announced a while ago.

  • Guest

So am I the only one who is wondering where Quantum Break was at MS E3?

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

They said before E3 that the game’s next showing will be at Gamescom.
