Rumor: Next Xbox requires internet connection to start games
Next-gen system said to tolerate dropped connections for limited time. The next Xbox will require an online connection to start games, but will be able to tolerate a dropped connection for a limited period of time, according to two Kotaku sources.
“Unless something has changed recently, Durango [codename for the next Xbox] consumer units must have an active internet connection to be used,” one source told the site.
“If there isn’t a connection, no games or apps can be started,” the source added. “If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time—currently three minutes, if I remember correctly—the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started.”
The rumor echoes previous whispers that the system would require an always on internet connection.
Other rumors claim the system won’t run games from the disc drive and that each must be installed. Another rumored requirement says the next-gen Kinect camera must always be connected for the system to function.
