Nintendo has entered into a worldwide partnership with Sega to release Sonic Lost World, the next entry in the company’s Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, exclusively on Wii U and 3DS, the company announced during today’s Nintendo Direct.
“Today, I would like to announce that we have entered into an worldwide partnership with Sega on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise,” said Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata. “The next game in the series, Sonic Lost World, is a brand new action-adventure platforming game that will launch exclusively on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.”
The announcement comes as part of a three-game Sonic deal with Sega, the second of which is Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, with details of the third Sonic title to be announced at a later date.

Outside of Sonic Lost World, Iwata announced that Sega plans on releasing the following Sega Game Gear titles on the 3DS Virtual Console:

- Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
- G-LOC: Air Battles
- Shining Force II: The Sword of Hajya
- Sonic Blast
- Sonic Drift 2
- Sonic Labyrinth
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Tails Adventure
- Vampire: Master of Darkness
These games will be available “soon.”
