Sony's next generation games console.

As we inch closer to Sony’s February 20 reveal of PlayStation 4, the PlayStation manufacturer is continuing its video series of the platform’s evolution. After PSone and PS2 came the next generation, PlayStation 3, Sony’s first high-definition system.

Even though Sony struggle at the beginning of this gen with the PS3. The PS3 continue to grow with amazing exclusives for the hardcore audience while introducing a 1:1 motion technology that was not force on the consumer but given as an option unlike another company who has abandoned the hardcore audience to chase the casuals. With amazing games & franchises like Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, Killzone, Ratchet & Clank, LittleBigPlanet, Gran Turismo 5, God Of War, Heavy Rain, inFamous, & more the PS3 is the only one still delivering hardcore games even with next gen consoles coming. Just like the PS1, PS2, PSP, & PS Vita I do not regret purchasing a PlayStation 3 nor would I ever sale it.

The PS3 made it’s mistake by focusing too much on hardware which only saw fruitfulness from first party developers who take a lot longer to release their games than third party. The strengths of the system became weaknesses, you can have the strongest system on the market but if you don’t make it development friendly it’s just another box.

People stated developers were lazy, if that were the case the complex design of the PS3 led to the 360 taking the number one spot, laziness or not games shouldn’t take more time to code for on one system compared to the other.

A console needs to consider how both first and third party developers can benefit, don’t just say we have the best worldwide studios out there, Microsoft took advantage of Sony’s pride

Marketing marketing marketing, can’t say it enough to Sony but they really need to do a better job than they have been.

PS3’s strengths came from being the number 1 venue for Netflix and the release of Playstation Plus. Also it was the go to device for Blu-ray movies one that it’s going to share with the Xbox 720 next gen

” if that were the case the complex design of the PS3 led to the 360 taking the number one spot” 360 Never had #1 spot except for that year that they had zero competition. Then the Wii
outsold their year or sales in about a month. 360 had/has #1 in USA and that’s it. They were barely 2 worldwide for years and Sony finally passed them as more and more people in America looked at the pros and cons of the PS3 vs 360. Not to mention how many of those sales were re-purchases from red rings before they put a warranty on those years later. Every 360 owner I know has had to buy 3+ cuz of red rings.

You’re pretty solid about everything else you say though. They do need better marketing.

Every PS3 owner I know has had several yellow light of deaths, while I’ve never met anyone who got a red ring. The real pro is that you don’t have to pay for PSN.

I know (fat) PS3 have had a YLOD record but when you say “several”, Are you serious? Wow, you also said not a single 360 user youve met had a red ring? Kind of begs me to question how many 360 users you know…….,,,,are you sure youve met a 360 user? Maybe he never used it…..Seriously none??
Sony did have a rough start with PS3 to be fair but i will “never” forget the RROD the 360 had (still has).

          • MosquitoLemon

Yes, none. Maybe they don’t use them as often? Maybe the people you know who keep getting red rings only buy refurbished ones? But yeah, none. At least the PS3s usually die under warranty.

    • MosquitoLemon

Totally agree. Most of the people I know that own it use it primarily as a media device. The people I know who were into hardcore gaming moved on to handhelds or back to PC.

Though they were going to talk about the PSP before the PS3

    • MosquitoLemon

Which begs the question of who is making/releasing these videos. We know SCEA all but abandoned the PSP after the failure of the Go, while it thrived/continues to thrive in Japan.

  • I like Playstation 2 the most but PS3 is the console that I have finished most games on it. Can’t wait for PS4 reveal!!!

  • shogunknight

Fair enough, they talked about the good features of the PS3. Sad some of these features came quite late but its still better than nothing. Watching that video makes me know why i still love the PS3. Will there be a vid for the handhelds?

So the PSP got skipped? Hope this doesn’t mean there won’t be much heavy VITA announcements on the 20th.
