SOCOM developer shut down.

Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed it’s closed Zipper Interactive, developer of the SOCOM series and MAG.

Rumors of the studio’s closure first surfaced last week.

“Sony Computer Entertainment can confirm the closure of Zipper Interactive, a Seattle-based internal game development studio that has been part of the global development operation of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS),” said Sony in a statement. “The closure is a result of a normal cycle of resource re-alignment within SCE WWS. Zipper has complete all work associated with its most recent project, Unit 13 for PlayStation Vita. Zipper titles MAG, SOCOM 4 and Unit 13 will continue to be supported, including the new Daily Challenges in Unit 13.”

Booourns. Granted they hit their high point with Socom2 and have been releasing solid, but not mammoth, titles since… but still, closing em?

  • This is quite saddening. I prefer playing their third person shooter games than Slant Six Games.

Well, MAG was pretty good… but SOCOM IV sucked. Really badly. And yes, it was that bad.

I am sorry to hear those people will be losing their jobs though. I wish there was another alternative to them closing down so they could come back and try to develop a SOCOM game that SOCOM fans wanted.

I hope many of the staff are put onto other teams within SCEWW or elsewhere asap.

At the same time, I will miss SOCOM and I will impatiently wait for its true return.

Sad times. Myself and my team were caught up in the 1500 layoffs during IBM’s annual restructuring this month. Today was my last day after over 2 years. I brought them over 3 million in revenue in the last 12 months. Guess my salary cut to deeply into that profit margin LoL!

Luckily I start my new job that is much better on Monday.

Here’s hoping these guys land on their feet just as quickly as I was lucky enough to.
