Rumor: Next Xbox requires internet connection to start games
posted on 04.04.13 at 04:21 PM EST by (@salromano)
Next-gen system said to tolerate dropped connections for limited time.

The next Xbox will require an online connection to start games, but will be able to tolerate a dropped connection for a limited period of time, according to two Kotaku sources.

“Unless something has changed recently, Durango [codename for the next Xbox] consumer units must have an active internet connection to be used,” one source told the site.

“If there isn’t a connection, no games or apps can be started,” the source added. “If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time—currently three minutes, if I remember correctly—the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started.”

The rumor echoes previous whispers that the system would require an always on internet connection.

Other rumors claim the system won’t run games from the disc drive and that each must be installed. Another rumored requirement says the next-gen Kinect camera must always be connected for the system to function.

I was one of the few that was fine with this for Diablo 3 (it HAS stopped thousands of potential hacks/cheats/dupes from getting in the game…not all, but enough for me to be happy about it), and SimCity (havnt had issues since day 3), but for EVERY game to require this bizarre. On consoles especially. Computers are almost always connected to the interent as it is. ACcording to MS and Sony themselves, a huge % (I think it was 60% or 40% of owners don’t have their systems connected to the internet ever. I only really even play single player games on my consoles cuz the MP is almost always better for my PC.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it also required a Gold account :|

The rumour sounds bad enough; if the status of someone’s account is also a requirement, then Sony has practically won before its even begun.

All of this sounds terrible. Sure, I’m looking forward to the PS4 and couldn’t care less about the Next XBOX, but even I wouldn’t wish this on their fans. Geez…

Could the next Xbox be DOA already, if this is believed to be true?

Never owned a Xbox console -and don’t really plan to- but tread carefully, Microsoft. You have have many fans to please.

    Rumour rumour rumour rumour rumour.
Nothing here is fact, move along people

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Well, it would be one thing if this was the first time we heard this, but it’s being reiterated… Which leads me to believe it’s more likely to be true than not at this point. It’s kind of like the design of the Dualshock 4. When we first saw it as a rumored picture, people were skeptical because it looked a little bizarre and some even said it was photoshopped. After it appeared a couple of times, from different perspectives though, some began to change their opinion of it and believed what they saw.

So yeah, this may still be a rumor (for now?), but it certainly doesn’t help that we’re hearing more about it now instead of not hearing more about it at all any more.

      • Simmsville

If you read the Kotaku news page instead of just this then you might read a little something that says that no official source has said anything on this matter, it’s all coming from outside sources, and the always online can be a simple matter of a firmware update away from being turned off permanently.

It honestly seems like the always online has been a developer prevention measure (by that I mean it’s there to stop devs from hacking and bypassing features that Microsoft doesn’t want to show off) that’s why they have also released specific patterned controllers to them

        • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

I didn’t have to go to the Kotaku news page to know it hasn’t been reported from an official source. Why else do you think it is a rumor if an official source hasn’t confirmed it yet? I’m saying… It doesn’t help matters that this “rumor” is being repeated.

There are plenty of rumors that circulate from unofficial sources (such as 2ch, neogaf, etc.) that turn out to be true. When it comes to rumors involving bad news, I go in as a pessimist and expect them to be true to prepare for the “worst case scenario”. That way, if it turns out the rumor is false, then great.

If it turns out to be true though, like I was thinking, well… At least I have prepared for that. In this case, I’d suggest the people waiting for this console to simply cross their fingers that this isn’t true, but be prepared if it is.

There has been a lot of rumous lately around this and i wouldn’t be surprised if this is true and many websites like Edge are saying this is true:

          http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/02/report-next-xbox-will-use-persistent-net-connection-to-block-used-games/

        • DrForbidden

If it were a rumour that faded away after the first couple of times we heard it, I would adopt the same stance as you. However, the fact that it won’t stay dead and keeps haunting the news like a very persistent zombie means that odds are high there is some form of truth to the rumour.

“It honestly seems like the always online has been a developer prevention measure (by that I mean it’s there to stop devs from hacking and bypassing features that Microsoft doesn’t want to show off) that’s why they have also released specific patterned controllers to them”

No offense intended, but that’s a pretty far-out argument. The patterned controllers are intended to identify which developer leaked out pictures about their controller. As for developers hacking the console, that makes absolutely zero sense. Developers don’t care about that. They care about making games on the platform for profit, not hacking the console to make it run linux or draw hidden dicks in the OS. In fact, from what I understand, developer kits/consoles are usually the ones which have their functions unlocked compared to retail units.

        Simmsblind.

  • LordKaiser

LOL Fail if this is true!

  • Shaun Huseman

    Ugh, thats garbage if true

  • $29082171

Dean Winchester would have a field day with this article.

  • Azoz

I wonder if Microsoft is enough stupid to do that.
I mean .. They know for sure about the leaks and how people react to them..

  • rockman29

Well screw you MS. Not the first time I said it, won’t be the last!

  • TruTrini4L1F3

If this turns out true I’m selling every fucking Microsoft product I have…Hell if u can even spell the word Microsoft on it I will throw it away…and pledge my body & money to apple & sony

    • DrForbidden

Apple and Sony are no better corporations. They’re smarter than Microsoft, yes, but certainly not better from a consumer rights standpoint.

  • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

I am curious if this is true.

  • PrinceHeir

lol i don’t really plan on getting the nextbox.

but yeah they’re pretty much shooting themselves on the foot here.

    • http://blacksitepsu.deviantart.com/ BlacksitePSU

More like they’re blowing off the entire leg. =T

  • Carlos Luis Ayala

Most of the PS4 rumors came true the controller the no backwards compatibility the only one that didn’t come true was the no used games but that was a patent not leaked specs I hope it is just a rumor for those planning on getting it.

  • Hatsuaki

If this is seriously true, then Microsoft is just dumb. I mean, the PS4 has clearly attracted most gamers by now, and no one finds these news positive.

  • RedWolfe

    Ok guys…let’s everyone calm down.

Let’s try to discuss this reasonably. I mean it’s still a rumor, right?

And even IF IT DOES turn out to be true, I’m sure there must be something good about this right?

    …right? Anyone?

  • MrKappa

These rumors are just too stupid to be true, I don’t even believe them for a second.

    • AdamBoy64

      Lolz. Yes.

If this rumour were true, it’d be Microsoft’s unique way of saying they want to leave the gaming industry.

      • DrForbidden

“If this rumour were true, it’d be Microsoft’s unique way of saying they want to leave the gaming industry.”

^This. Unless Sony does the same.

  • MrRobbyM

Can we quit calling it Durango and just call it the Nextbox already?

But seriously, I wouldn’t be too surprised if it were true. This is an old rumor so I’m not going to bash Kotaku, but uh…Kotaku. Microsoft would just be doing what Sony did with the PS3 in the begining, rely on fan loyalty to bring in sales if they did this. No one is invincible. Even Microsoft would suffer from this.

  • hush404

I hold hope on the ‘it’s only rumor right now’ ideal… but the fact that so many sources are saying the same thing scares me. That being said, if their next machine comes out with this kind of DRM (thats basically what it is) and people are wholly negative to and refuse to buy the product because of it, Microsoft will HAVE to back-peddle and remove that restrictive bit (or gimp it) or face their product stalling in sales.

Gamers should note that it’s their money that does the talking. If you don’t agree with something, don’t buy it, they’ll notice.

  • http://twitter.com/AnthonyFoster5 Anthony Foster

MS: “The system wont run without a constant internet connection, but we are launching with forever-exclusive releases of Half-Life 3, Halo 5, Final Fantasy 15, and for all future games in both series: Call of Duty and Battlefield. So fuck you people with lousy or no internet connections, we win.”

    • MrRobbyM

I’d just abandon gaming as a whole or just stick with handhelds. I couldn’t bring myself to support such greed.

Will this is a mess for MS rumors be true or not

  • Acidicsam

All of these, plus this: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=534951

That’s the creative director of Microsoft Studios, acting like an immature prick because of the backlash to always-online.

Microsoft has three options at this point:

    1) laugh at all these rumors that aren’t true (hopeful)

    2) learn that people really don’t want this and take it out (hopeful)

    3) start developing a version of Halo 5 for the PC or PS4, because they won’t last long with a requirement like this.

  • ramonq619

If that is true I’ll still buy it. There is a lot of people that won’t because of that but i don’t think it will be true. I really want to see what will be new. I’ve heard it will be unveiled this month. I think i saw it on ign

  • Nitraion

    If its true…
    RIP Xbox
Unless you establish that internet connection is become common consume that everyone in the world use it….. it will in those future movies

  • Ace

I was pretty interested in this news piece and then I saw that the sources for these rumors were Kotaku… Then I just stopped reading completely.

  • Tetsu

So many…bad rumors. I hope they aren’t true for Nextbox owners.

  • Paul Rodriguez

I can not stand this always connected thing companies are trying to get people into. Me, I don’t do much online. My PS3 and 360 are rarely connected (I don’t care for online play). Hell, I don’t even have a facebook (just twitter). Also, not every place has great internet or even high speed internet so they might be left out in the cold with the new Xbox console.

  • Roland Gmyrek

MS have grown complacent with their current successes in the States and UK, as mainland Europe and Japan don’t give a fuck about 360. So they think their loyal sheeple will buy Xbox3 over PS4 based on brand recognition alone wholly ignoring its many faults and anti-consumer features. This system does not sound like a game console to me (if the rumors hold any merit) but more like an advertisement platform for third parties with the capability to play games provided the user has a stable internet connection.

They seem to forget that their brand ain’t as powerful as Apple. Apple may demand ridiculously high prices for their latest product every six months and their fan base will buy into them. I doubt MS has a similarly devoted fan-base that can ignore PS4 many merits over Xbox3.

I’m really starting to feel sorry for anybody buying the system being oblivious of the mandatory internet connection and the inability to borrow/lend or buy/sell 2nd hand games.
