Another PlayStation 4 report, this time from Nikkei.

PlayStation 4 concept by Hesit8in.

Another PlayStation 4 report is in from Nikkei.

According to the Japanese outlet, the network function of PlayStation 4 will be expanded, including a new social feature where you can exchange opinions among your friends while playing games.

The system is said to utilize Gaikai cloud technology, which Sony purchased for $380 million in the summer of last year.

Echoing previous reports, the outlet claims the Sony developed “Cell” chip loaded onto the PlayStation 3 will not be included in PlayStation 4, and that it’ll arrive by the holidays.

PlayStation 4 is expected to be revealed during PlayStation Meeting 2013 in New York City on February 20. Its controller will supposedly have a touch pad.

More and more talk as the day gets closer. Let’s see how much of it sticks.

    • Pyrofrost

Very true and I couldn’t agree more, but isn’t all the rumors and speculation before a console reveal half the fun ^_^

      • Solomon_Kano

It really is, it’s actually my favorite part of getting new consoles.

It’s just that some people get too caught up in rumors near the reveal and end up dissatisfied with the final result. That usually comes from all of the way out speculation, so I could do without that. Love the rumors though lol.

Gaikai over Cell. I can see it now…

Play all* your PS3 games on the PS4!**

*Games must be purchased from PSN.
    **Internet connection required.

Maybe it would’ve been cheaper upfront to include PS3 tech in every PS4, but in the end there’s more money to be made from digital sales

    • Sevyne

If they also included the Cell in the PS4, the console would just be repeating the same mistake they made with the PS3 at launch and be insanely overpriced. I’m sorry, but that would just be incredibly stupid of them. I bet if they did include it and the console was priced at over $600 (which it definitely would be) you’d still be in here screaming bloody murder over it. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

      • veruses

I agree. If you want to continue with PS3 games, it’s right there for $200~ or so price range and you know how long the PS1/2 was. PS3 will be just as long.

I still have a bunch of ps3 games to finish myself so it ain’t going anywhere for me.

        • syaznifaiq

yeah, it simple as that, you want to play PS3 game. go buy PS3, PS4 games is for PS4.. nuff said

        • DrForbidden

That’s not really a valid suggestion. Let’s say:

          Non-BC PS4 $450
          PS3 $200
          Total: $650

          BC PS4 $650

There’s no real difference if you still want your library of PS3 games to work after your current PS3 dies. It still comes up to the same cost and you have to maintain 2 machines instead of one.

But yeah, the lower price point is necessary to break into the market and for new buyers.

      • 浪黒雷 (ro-kurorai)

I second that. If I wanna play my PS3 games I will do so on my current system. Thanks to digital audio encoders and multiple HDMI ins on TVs/monitors it’s no biggie having two systems connected at once.

  • syaznifaiq

Sony not included the ‘Cell’ microprocessor on PS4 is a good thing right ? . I assume Maybe they want to use a microprocessor which is more powerful than ‘cell’ …

    • DrForbidden

Well, yes and no. It almost certainly means no BC for PS3 games.

      • syaznifaiq

we can still play PS3 games of PS3 .. man, cant wait FEB 20

    • Zohar127

Well the PS4 was never going to use the Cell as it’s main processor. People were just wondering if the PS4 would have a Cell chip integrated in the console as a secondary system used ONLY to play PS3 games.

Sony has supposedly decided NOT to include the Cell chip in the PS4, meaning it won’t play PS3 discs.

It is a good thing that they aren’t including it though because it cuts down on costs.

      • syaznifaiq

        Good to hear that

      • Pyrofrost

Question: are people 100% sure that this new processor could not some how be configured to also play PS3 games? I mean, isn’t it possible that the Cell chip may not even be needed? I’m hoping at least some degree of emulation is possible.

I know the Emotion Engine has issues, but I don’t want to automatically assume the same result will be occurring with the Cell.

      • Budgiecat

wut bout digitally purchased PS3 games

  • Prodigy-X

    I’m buying PS4 day one.

    • rockman29

      hells yea, love the enthusiasm

same here if i can manage it :)

    • Syltique

      Work it girl!

      • http://www.facebook.com/wtfits.gardner Cat Flames

        *works it*

      • Prodigy-X

        LOL!!!!!! I’m a male.

        • paperclichepixel

          Well Full Monty, that SHIT!!

    • MrRobbyM

I’ve decided to never do that since they drop in price so fast but I DO want to support them at the same time. So to make it up, I think I’ll buy first party games on release, something I don’t normally do, until the price of the console lowers considerably. That, or a new, slim version is announced.

      • Prodigy-X

I wouldn’t really regret it at all though since it maybe only $399 now $599 hell no I wouldn’t buy that at launch for any device.

        • MrRobbyM

Oh yeah. If you got the money no problem there. I’m just thinking out loud lol. I just hate to shell out hundreds of dollars for something that will get a slim version a year later and cost less T_T If I only waited one more year I wouldn’t be stuck with a 80GB PS3 phat that’s running out of space fast.

    • Mateus Prado Sousa

      do you have money?

      • Prodigy-X

        Yes!!!!!

        • Budgiecat

          give me some…

    • Rezar

I will wait to see what either the PS4 or Xbox Next have to offer first.

    • KurisuMakise

So long as it’s $400ish I’ll be with you! Hype!

      • 浪黒雷 (ro-kurorai)

It won’t be over 400 bucks, Sony can’t afford to slap a higher price tag on their machine, no matter how advanced it might be. Most consumers ain’t gonna like it if it’s priced north of 400.
I haven’t made up my mind yet but I will probably wait for a Japanese LE one before splashing out, as I love them sexy Japanese special designs and by now /been using a Japanese PS3 since December 2k9) I can’t confirm with X anymore, gotta be O ^^

        • KurisuMakise

I’ve always preferred to confirm with O but Jumping with O, eh feels like Super Nintendo which kinda throws my game off after PS1/PS2, certain PSP titles, and of course PS3 stuff. I could get used to it though but most times the LEs are pretty expensive too xD So I doubt I could wait, even when exposed to the potential opportunity this time around.

          • 浪黒雷 (ro-kurorai)

Ahem, In-game actions are always identical to the international versions ;)
The only thing that’s different is confirming with maru (O) and cancelling with batsu (X). Jumping is still performed on X ^^

            • KurisuMakise

Tell that to Kingdom Hearts =P!

              • 浪黒雷 (ro-kurorai)

Didn’t know that, sorry. I guess it’s an exception.

    • http://www.facebook.com/john.goetz.35 John Goetz

This will be the first console I buy day one and will camp out for. So excited already.

  • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

“a new social feature where you can exchange opinions among your friends while playing games.”
Good luck doing that without a keyboard…

“Sony developed “Cell” chip loaded onto the PlayStation 3 will not be included in PlayStation 4″
There goes the BC feature and the “Cell” Chip…. What a shame to let these go to waste…

    • Prodigy-X

I agree with the Keyboard thing but what if you can transfer your games from the PS3 to the Cloud service by a simple firmware update.

      • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

We’re not in Cloud Streaming age yet…. I rather see Gaikai as a big power-up for PSN, therefore eliminating slow downloading and online play…

        • Prodigy-X

Well its all or nothing and transferring games to the cloud service is Sony only option with the PS4 BC. Now they could create a USB dongle that has a cell in it and you can download your games to it, then plug it into the PS4 and start playing your games that way.

          • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Or you could keep your PS3 with you… Creating a USB dongle like that sounds expensive no matter how I think about it…

            • Prodigy-X

Like I said all or nothing.

    • DesmaX

Well, if the dualshock has a touchpad it could use a “mobile-like” keyboard. That could work

      • DrForbidden

Wouldn’t such a touchpad be too small, though?

        • rockman29

they could widen the controller maybe

kind of wondering what the final thing will look like, exciting stuff, havent had a big chance since PS1 (which is good)

      • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Yes, it could work… But it would need a bigger touchpad to accommodate all keys and it would probably result in a bigger DualShock… I’m worried about the sizes of the keys though…

  • EspadaKiller

PS4 will definitely be my first next-gen console. But maybe not on launch day, unless it has the games that I want.

    • Pyrofrost

Agreed, for me it’s not a matter of “if” I will be getting a PS4, but a matter of when. I just have a personal unwritten rule that says, “Don’t buy consoles on launch day.”

      • EspadaKiller

Yeap, there will be full of problems on launch consoles. Happens all the time.

  • Eclipse

Ah, so the PS4 probably won’t have the BC feature.
I’m perfectly fine with that, since that’s what my PS3 is for.

  • Kamille

the first thing I’m gonna do on Feb 21 is call Gamestop to ask if they are taking pre-orders for the PS4. ;)

  • Sterling Cole

If they intend to have me buy my PS3 games again they can go Fu*k themselves.

    • Budgiecat

They did that with PS2 Classics and HD collections lol

    • Elvick

      Don’t sell your PS3. It’s like magic.

    • MrRobbyM

Keep your PS3. Simple as that. People are still buying PS2’s so there’s not much excuse.

  • GaySkull

If you want to play PS3 games go get a PS3 and play it there. Its the most economical, sensible, efficient and practical thing to do.

    • MrRobbyM

This. BC is a nice thing, it really is. But the PS3 can do so many things that it’d be a shame to not need it anymore. My big hunka console just wouldn’t have much value. If losing BC means for a cheaper and better looking Ps4, then no problems here.

      • Budgiecat

But then what about all the digital purchases tied to your PSN account? I imagine it should be able to play digital but not physical (probably a plan to push digital distribution more…hmm)

        • MrRobbyM

Yeah, exactly. The option is there for people that want to play PS3 games on their PS4 but cut down on the cost to not include BC. As long as the digital version aren’t expensive, I don’t see a problem.

    • Elvick

Not really, the most efficient is to have one device that plays it all.

I value b/c, but it’s not the deciding factor for me. I’ll buy the PS4 regardless. But I’d like to be able to free up space on my shelf, and not have to use two HDMI cables for two things… when the new one should just take over completely from the old one.

  • Mar Mar

Ummmm…. what would be the launch games of PS4? Watchdogs? GT6?

And hopefully PS4 stays region-free as PS3 hahahahaha

    • awaiken

      Explain your laughter

      • Belenger

I’n guessing Vita draconian memory card account lock.

        • Elvick

Vita is still region free. PSN stuff is just tedious on it.

          • Belenger

That’s why I said “draconian memory card account lock”, hey wanna use more than one account? well.. Nope, at least they could make the reset process more streamlined without having to watch the Discover video every time you factory reset.

            • Elvick

              I know, was just sayian.

I really hope the PS4 has a user system like the PS3. It’s fast and perfect.

              • Belenger

                I hear ya.

  • MrRobbyM

PS4 is going to bring Sony to a better state. I can feel it, ya know? Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but I just can’t take another gen like this.

    • Budgiecat

Will we finally get a Godzilla game?

      • MrRobbyM

An HD Godzilla game like Destory all Monsters with a proper story mode would be awesome.

        • Solomon_Kano

Anything similar to Destroy All Monsters and I’ll pre-order the damn system!

  • Mateus Prado Sousa

LOL at this PS4 concept Hesit8in

  • awaiken

What venue in NYC are they hosting the reveal?

  • paperclichepixel

    U R NOT READY!

  • fallen

no backwards compatibility = no dice.

until six years on when it hits $199 with four pack-in games on black friday. or something like that

edit: oh look at that entire thread up there discussing this very subject. sorry for the redundant post. BUT I SHAN’T DELETE IT MWAHAHAHA >:3

    • PrinceHeir

      agree.

i’ll still keep my PS3(just like my PS2)

but man could have been awesome if it was BC.

      i’ll probably wait on this.

but would love to see it though :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Warboss-Aohd/100003803614469 Warboss Aohd

    ………so wot about da gamez?

  • gamelayer

If the PS4 launch games are as lackluster as the PS3’s, then I definitely
won’t be buying one on release.
