■ Story
In Tianeea, the Fire Village, everyone is preparing for the coming of the Faerie and the naming of an “alm.” Every four years, alms from around the world are chosen to travel to the Tree of Mana and rejuvenate the flow of mana power by offering their souls. A soul guard accompanies the chosen alms to ensure their safe pilgrimage.
On the day of the Faerie’s arrival, Val, the new soul guard, brings his childhood friend, Hinna, to the festival. As the sun falls beneath the skyline, all the spectators wait with bated breath, hoping to be chosen as an alm. The Faerie finally descends before Hinna, appointing her the Alm of Fire.
The villagers bid them both farewell, praying for their success as they embark on the adventure of a lifetime.
■ Characters
Palamena (voiced by Vanessa Lemonides in English, Yoko Hikasa in Japanese)
“Tell me, what would you expect from a monarch?”
Palamena is the young Queen of Illystana, Capital of the Deep. After the death of her father, she succeeded the throne. Since then, Palamena has been navigating her way through Illystana’s societal expectations and turbulent politics while also caring for Iain, her young brother.
Julei (voiced by Amber Aviles in English, Yumiri Hanamori in Japanese)
“Sproutlings take what life gives us and we’re grateful for it.”
Julei is a sproutling from Verdeus Borough. He is its current custodian, in charge of watering his sleeping companions. Julei has been whiling away the hours with the same old chores every day but his encounter with Val and the team brings an unexpected change to his life.
■ Team Setup
You have the option of creating your own three-person dream team from the five possible player characters (Val, Careena, Morley, Palamena, and Julei). The characters who aren’t participating in the battle will still receive the same EXP, allowing you to swap out party members at your leisure.
Palamena
Specializes in powerful, long-range magic attacks.
Morley
Specializes in fast, close-range battles.
Val
Proficient at offensive and defensive melee.
Careena
Supports allies with buffs and area-of-effect attacks.
Julei
Supports allies with healing and regenerative abilities.
During battle you can switch between any of the three members of your party to command them directly or rely on pre-set strategies for each non-operated character.
■ Elemental Vessels
Elemental vessels are mystical artifacts that house the power of the elements within them. Each vessel contains mana from a different element. You can wield these powers in combat and while exploring.
Exploration: Elemental Triggers
You can use an elemental vessel at the curiously glowing triggers scattered throughout the land and harness its individual power to generate gusts of wind, move rocks, or even slow down time to open pathways and find hidden items on the map. Once you get a new vessel, don’t forget to revisit areas you’ve already passed through. Accessing other triggers will unlock new places for you to explore/
Battles: Switching Classes
Obtain the various elemental vessels to switch your characters to new classes. Different classes unlock different stats, weapon types, and unique moves or abilities based on their corresponding elemental. Some abilities can restrict an enemy’s movements or cast regenerative effects to heal your allies. Change classes to see which element has the best skills for your individual fighting style!
■ Elemental Vessels: Exploration and Triggers
Here are some examples of what you can do with those mysterious elemental vessels out in the huge semi-open field. Use the corresponding vessel to activate the trigger and continue your adventure.
Vessel of Water: Undine Flask
Undine is the elemental of water. Her elemental vessel can control the ebb and flow of water. With it, you can enter the floating bubbles you find on your journey and move them around at will. The Undine Flask can also be used to cool down any magma blocking your way so you can safely progress through hot areas.
Vessel of Wood: Dryad Sprig
Dryad is the elemental of wood. Her elemental vessel can harness the regenerative healing power of plants. You can also use it to grow large flowers to carry you across broken paths or give yourself a boost to reach inaccessible areas.
Vessel of Fire: Salamando Candle
Salamando is the elemental of fire. His elemental vessel can harness the power of flame. While exploring the field, you can ride on the Salamando Candle to propel yourself through the air like a rocket.
■ Elemental Vessels: Battles and Classes
Use the elemental powers in the vessels to change classes and gain new abilities. Each character has their own specific class for every elemental vessel, so try them out and see which combination of classes fits for your team of choice!
Vessel of Water: Undine Flask
Undine is the elemental of water. Her elemental vessel can control the ebb and flow of water. Blast enemies off their feet with streams of water or attack them with homing water bubbles that deal damage.
—Val + Undine Flask = Class: Duelist
—Palamena + Undine Flash = Class: Grand Diviner
—Julei + Undine Flask = Class: Scholar
Vessel of Wood: Dryad Sprig
Dryad’s elemental of wood. Her elemental vessel can harness regenerative healing power of plants. Create healing zones to keep replenishing your HP and the HP of your allies for a set amount of time.
—Val + Dryad Sprig = Class: Edelfrei
—Palamena + Dryad Sprig = Class: Beastleader
—Julei + Dryad Sprig = Class: Sage
Vessel of Fire: Salamando Candle
Salamando is the elemental of fire. His elemental vessel can harness the power of flame. Charge at enemies with fiery attacks or engulf them in flames to cause damage over time.
—Careena + Salamando Candle = Class: Divine Fist
—Palamena + Salamando Candle = Class: Masquer
—Val + Salamando Candle = Class: Liege
■ Elemental Vessels: Battles and Elemental Plots
The elemental plot shows how attuned a character is to each elemental vessel. Advancing along the plot is how you acquire powerful moves and abilities. A branch of the plot is unlocked whenever you obtain a new vessel.
Moves learned from the elemental plot are still usable even if you switch classes. Meanwhile, abilities are class-specific and only take effect when the corresponding class is in use. These abilities have unique effects, so experiment with different strategies to best leverage each character’s innate skills!
Moves
Strong skills that require MP to use. Moves come in a variety of types, such as magic spells or traps.
Abilities
Abilities can improve character stats such as attack or defense, as well as a variety of other effects that aid the party in battle.
Starter Classes
Starter class refers to the class a character assumes when not equipped with an elemental vessel.
Maxing out the elemental plot of a single element will allow the starter class to equip weapons which were previously unable to equip, assign abilities not native to their class, and use class strikes from other classes.
Certain items can be also used to expand the plot, granting the character access to a higher tier of powerful moves.
■ Battles: Ring Menu and Shortcuts
Moves—powerful maneuvers that cost MP to execute—can be utilized from the ring menu, a Mana series staple. Only moves that have been set to the ring menu can be used in battle, so it’s important to consider both the team line-up and your personal play style when customizing your ring menu. Combat will pause while the ring menu is open, giving you time to plan out your next move.
↓
In addition to the ring menu, shortcuts are another way to instantly execute moves or access items. Assigning frequently used spells and items to a shortcut allows for a more intuitive and fast-paced playing experience.
■ Trusty Companions: Vuscav and Flammie
Beloved Mana series travel companions Vuscav and Flammie make a welcome return in Visions of Mana, ready to sail the sea or soar above the clouds with you! No matter where your journey takes you, you can count on these two to safely deliver you to your destination. Vuscav and Flammie can be summoned by using the Ferry Flute and Flammie Drum, respectively.
Vuscav
This mysterious, turtle-like creature will help you traverse the open waters of the world.
Flammie
This sacred beast of legend can fly you quickly across the world map.
■ What is the Mana Series?
Originally released in 1991 as Final Fantasy Adventure, a spin-off title for the Final Fantasy series, the game’s positive reception established it as its own standalone action RPG franchise.
The unique elements that make a true Mana game include; an emotional narrative about the power of mana, the legendary Mana Sword, a quirky cast of characters, memorable music, and a weapon-based battle system. The Mana series has released 17 titles over the last 30-plus years and sold over nine million copies / downloads worldwide. The demand for the franchise from its fans has seen several Mana games re-mastered and re-released in the West over the last console generation.
