Square Enix uncertain how many games will span the Final Fantasy VII Remake project [Update 2]
Square Enix currently planning out the scope for the second game.Speaking to Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, Final Fantasy VII Remake director Yoshinori Kitase could not say how many games the remake project will consist of “because we don’t know ourselves.”
Kitase added that the development team is currently in the process of planning out the scope for the second game while simultaneously finishing up the development of the first game.
Part one of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, which spans two Blu-ray discs and covers all of Midgar, is due out for PlayStation 4 on March 3, 2020.

Update 6:20 p.m.: Game Informer reports Kitase saying that he does not believe development on further entries in the remake project will be much shorter than development of the first game.
According to Kitase, while characters and such are done, which will make some things easier, new environments will likely still take some time. “I do not expect it to be dramatically shorter,” he said.
Square Enix public relations sent Game Informer a follow-up e-mail following that statement from Kitase. The e-mail said, “While the development team finishes the first game of the project, they are also planning the volume of content for the second. Due to the work already done on the first game, we anticipate that the development of the second game will be more efficient. However, for now we would like to focus on the development of the first game.”
Update 06/12/19 at 3:45 p.m.: In a series of tweets from the official Final Fantasy VII Remake Twitter account, Kitase said the following:
Final Fantasy VII Remake goes much deeper into the world and characters of Final Fantasy VII than ever before.
It’s a huge volume of work and data to re-imagine this world. Each game in the project will have a volume of content comparable to a standalone Final Fantasy.
While the development team finish the first game in the project, we are continuing to plan and outline the overall volume of content for the second.
Due to the work already done on the first game we anticipate development of the second game to be more efficient. We have our own internal schedule and plan, but for now we’d like to focus our information on the first game in the project.
The first game in the project takes place in the eclectic city of Midgar, we chose to focus on Midgar as it best represents the world of VII as a location more than any other. Midgar is full of imagination with myriad influences and surprises around every corner.
