Super Mario Maker will launch for Wii U on September 11 in North America and Europe, Nintendo announced.
Nintendo also announced that it will release two special 8-bit Mario Amiibo figures that, when tapped with Super Mario Maker, adds a Big Mushroom power-up to your course, allowing Mario to grow big and bust blocks from any direction, as well as adding a retro visual filter to the game.
Additionally, other Amiibo will also be compatible with Super Mario Maker through the use of a new item called the “Mystery Mushroom.” This allows Mario to take on the appearance of other characters—like Link, Kirby, or Wii Fit Trainer—complete with specific animations and sound effects. These costumes can be unlocked by completing the “100 Mario Challenge” mode, or by tapping the Amiibo of that character to the Wii U GamePad.
There will also be a new “Costume Mario,” which turns Mario into a different character when he gets a mushroom when the game is tapped with a compatible Amiibo (Wii Fit Trainer or Link, for example).
