October 2014 NPD: PS4 leads, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS tops 1.2 million
3DS has its 10th million-seller in the U.S.U.S. video game sales results for the month of October 2014 are in.
General
Consumers spent $790.7 million on new games, hardware, and accessories in October, down one percent from the $791.3 million spent over the same period in 2013.
Hardware sales generated $273.6 million, a 59 percent increase from the same period in 2013. Most sales were of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One units.
“October 2014 marks the first 12 months of sales for the Xbox One and PS4,” NPD’s Liam Callahan said. “After the first year, these consoles have had a great start as cumulative sales are currently over 70 percent higher than the combined first year totals of Xbox 360 and PS3.”
Software sales generated $350.3 million, which is down 28 percent from the $482.6 million spent on games during the same period in 2013.
Top ranking standalone software for the month include:
- NBA 2K15 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
- Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (3DS)
- The Evil Within (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360, PC)
- Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (360, PS3, PC)
- Destiny (360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3)
- Skylanders: Trap Team (360, Wii, Wii U, PS3, Xbox One, PS4, 3DS, mobile)
- FIFA 15 (PS4, 360, PS3, Xbox One, Wii, PS Vita, 3DS)
- Madden NFL 15 (360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One)
- Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (PS4, XBox One, PC)
- Minecraft (360, PS3, PS4)
The order of each platform shows which version of the game sold better.
The Evil Within set a new record for the highest-selling first-month sales for a release in the survival–horror genre, the NPD said.
Sony
PlayStation 4 was the best-selling hardware in October, Sony announced.
Microsoft
Microsoft did not release a statement.
After a month on the market, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has sold 1.2 million units in combined physical and gitial units in the U.S. The game sold more than 485,000 total units in October to become the 10th 3DS title to sell at least one million units in the U.S.
Nintendo’s million-selling 3DS games include:
- Mario Kart 7 – 3.62 million
- Super Mario 3D Land – 3.34 million
- New Super Mario Bros. 2 – 2.33 million
- Pokemon X – 2.11 million
- Pokemon Y – 2.03 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D – 1.41 million
- Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon – 1.36 million
- Animal Crossing: New Leaf – 1.42 million
- Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS – 1.20 million
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds – 1.06 million
Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are likely to become the 11th and 12th 3DS titles to join the million-sellers when they launch on November 21.
Through the first 10 months of 2014, Wii U hardware and software sales increased by 47 percent and 84 percent, respectively, compared to the same period in 2013. Nintendo projects these numbers will continue to increase with the launch of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Amiibo on November 21, and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on December 5.
