September 2014 NPD: PS4 and Destiny lead
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS sells 705,000 in two days.U.S. video game sales results for the month of September 2014 are in.
General
Consumers spent $1.1 billion on new retail games and consoles between August 31 and October 4, up two percent from the $1.08 billion spent over a similar period in 2013.
Hardware sales generated $432.7 million in revenue, up 136 percent from last September’s $183.4 million. Twice as much was spent purchasing new consoles compared to August.
Software sales generated $481.2 million in revenues, which is down 36 percent from the $754 million generated in September 2013.
Top ranking standalone software for the month include:

- FIFA 15 (PS4, 360, PS3, Xbox One, Wii, Vita, 3DS)
- Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (3DS)
- Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
- NHL 15 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
- Minecraft (360, PS3)
- The Sims 4 (PC)
- Disney Infinity 2.0 (360, PS3, Wii U, PS4, Xbox One)
- Diablo III: Reaper of Souls (PS4, 360, PS3, Xbox One, PC)
The order of each platform shows which version of the game sold better. You’ll notice that Destiny sold better on Xbox One. This isn’t exactly accurate, as it includes any copy of Destiny added free during an Xbox One promotion that ran during its launch week in September. The chart, however, doesn’t include copies of Destiny include within the Glacier White PlayStation 4 bundle Scroll down to the Sony section for further context.
Sony
PlayStation 4 was September’s top-selling hardware, Sony announced. The console nearly tripled its August sales, according to Sony Computer Entertainment America brand boss Guy Longworth.
Madden NFL 15, NHL 15, and FIFA 15 sold more units on PlayStation 4 compared to Xbox One.
September produced more revenue for the PlayStation Store in the U.S. than any prior month, and 90 percent more than September 2013. This is largely thanks to the launch of Destiny, which broke PlayStation Store records for most pre-orders, launch day sales, and first-week sales.
According to Activision‘s estimates, Destiny sold more units on PlayStation 4 worldwide as of October 4. It is also the most-played game on PlayStation 4, and increased PlayStation Plus subscriptions by 115 percent.
Official PlayStation 4 sales numbers weren’t released, but it is estimated to have sold 538,000.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS launched on October 3 in the U.S. and sold 705,000 units within two days of release, finishing as the number four best-selling software SKU for September.
135,000 copies of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS were sold through the Nintendo eShop.
The 3DS hardware family moved over 140,000 units thanks to the game’s release, which is a 55 percent increased compared to sales in August.
On the Wii U side, hardware sales increased by 50 percent thanks to Hyrule Warriors and Mario Kart 8. Specific numbers were not shared.
Hyrule Warriors sol over 190,000 since its launch on September 26 and Mario Kart 8 sold another 60,000 copies during its fifth month on the market, bringing its total sales in the U.S. to nearly 1.2 million units.
Microsoft
Microsoft released the following statement:

We’re offering great Xbox One bundles aligned with the most anticipated game launches of the year, including Assassin’s Creed Unity, Sunset Overdrive and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and incredible deals for fans. Combined with blockbusters like Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Grand Theft Auto V, Destiny and Forza Horizon 2, we are committed to making Xbox One a great place to play this holiday.”
Official Xbox One sales numbers weren’t released, but it is estimated to have sold 284,000.
