Square Enix thinking of things to make you happy.

Square Enix has launched a mysterious new teaser site.

The site reads:

As of April 1st we’ve reached our 10th anniversary!

We hope you’ll continue supporting us going forward as well!

We’re thinking of collaborations and a bunch of things that should make everyone a little bit happy.

It’ll be settled soon, so we’ll keep you posted.

The anniversary referred to in the text is that of Squaresoft and Enix’s merger to Square Enix on April 1, 2003.

Stay tuned.

Update: It looks like the site’s been taken down, which could mean it was all just an April Fools’ Day joke.

…I hope they unmerge and we get Squaresoft back with their original staff.

    • Awnye

Was going to say this. Enix pretty much ruined Squaresoft.

      • MrSirFeatherFang

        What was wrong with Enix?

        • Zachary Cantrell

It’s an easy scapegoat for people who don’t know the companies history. :P

        • adhesive

The problem with Enix was that it was never a developer. Squaresoft merged with them because Sakaguchi almost bankrupted them, not because they felt their games could be even better with Enix’s help. That’s why you see franchises being whored out so much. Stuff like All The Bravest wouldn’t be happening if Squaresoft somehow managed to stay alive.

          • Budgiecat

Yes it would have. And it would have been localized.

            • Ritsujun

              You jellycat?

          • rockman29

Enix bought Squaresoft. They didn’t merge.

It was sold to the public as a merger, so they could assimilate the brand of Squaresoft.

Unfortunately many blind fanboys ran away with this and assumed everything was jolly good like the old days.

      • xMCXx

Dunno, Kingdom Hearts 2 was good.
        And this was SE.
That’s the only thing I can think of, though. : P

      • Zachary Cantrell

Bull, the best stuff to come out of Squenix in the last deacade has been the Enix stuff. Dragon Warrior, Valkyrie Profile 2, Radiatat Stories, etc.

The problem with Square is that a lot of their top shelf talent left the company (The Xenosaga team, the Shadow Hearts team, Hironobu Sakaguchi), but that started in the late 90s. It has less to do with the merger and more to do with people wanting to launch their own projects outside of the company. The people left have trying to do their best impersonation of 90s square for the last console generation but it’s not turned out so well.

      • Tetsu

Uh, Enix was an amazing standalone company before.

Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile. Dragon Warrior, GRANDIA, and they populated older consoles as well!

        • $29082171

They didn’t make those games though, only published them.

Hell, Enix themselves never developed a single videogame.

          • Tetsu

Who cares? XSEED Games is an amazing company, and that’s ALL they do, is publish games. And I really really appreciate all they’ve brought us. They are the uprising underdogs of localization nowadays – – Killer Is Dead says hi.

Without companies like Enix, XSEED, Gung Ho, we wouldn’t see these games. That’s why they exist. Game Arts, Tri Ace and other such development studios always have homes under publishers, that’s how alot of stuff works. That’d be like saying Deus Ex isn’t SE because it was made by Eidos Montreal. but that’s WHY it exists. They need benefactors.
That’s why Bayonetta 2 is now on Wii U, thanks Nintendo.

What I’m trying to say is, without these publisher hospices, games are often not able to see the light of day, and Enix had some GREAT developers under it’s wing, and for a reason. That mutual bond was what sparked Square-Soft’s interest in the company in the first place. Cause all those “non-enix” games, where did they end up? With Square-Enix. Star Ocean 3, Valkyrie Profile 2, Grandia 3, Dragon Quest 8 all came after that merger. They were apart of the system that was Enix.

            • $29082171

Aren’t you giving them too much credit then? I mean, it’s not like say, Tri-Ace and Quintet couldn’t have gotten someone else to be their publisher, I know they’ve worked with other publishers like Nintendo and Konami. You could replace Enix but you can’t replace the developers themselves.

              • Tetsu

I donno about that, there is alot of merit that comes along with a publisher. Marketing strategy, and even green-lighting things, as well as pushing for new ideas and games. I don’t think the business of publishing is such a fleeting thing that any old chum could do it. Take DMC: Devil May Cry for example. Capcom was only the publisher, and Ninja Theory had to show that there version of the game would succeed and sell, that it would provide enough interest to boast a re-boot. Publishers make alot of choices. But yes, the developer is the meat to the bones of any game, and they are who I really love, but I don’t think dismissing the publisher as a contributing factor can be so immediate.

      • Budgiecat

        Wada ruined Square

        • I wouldn’t pull all the blame on him, the team even said themselves that they wanted to show what they were capable of instead of being held in other peoples shadows

    • That won’t change anything, the new people decided to head in a new direction

    • LordKaiser

Squaresoft was decaying even before the merger.

  • Tac-Mex

Inb4 a lot of fans claiming that is gonna be the announcement of Versis XIII XDXD

  • Isn’t this fun? It’s like the last 10 years of Square Enix were only a really prolonged april fools. :D

Edit: Wonder what they’ll do this year, Crystal Chronicles with 8 years of waiting or a really gorgeous FFVIII tech demo for a game remake that will never exist.

  • Tac-Mex

Honestly i dont care anymore, Remember the TWEWY teaser site and it was a horrible IOS port? Or the teaser website where everyone was expecting a new Star Ocean game but it was a web browser game?

I am not expecting anymore from this mediocre company with extraordinary losses

    • Tac-Mex

Oh and why the negative votes? Im just saying the truth, if se was a good company we already have Bravely Default or Type 0

      • Jared Carter

They are a great company who’ve lost their way. Also not a lot of people are showing interest enough for them to bring those games over. They have to make money, not just release the games to make some fans happy.

        • Tac-Mex

Moderator – You don’t have to agree, but calling people stupid, or fanboys, is completely unnecessary.

          • Guest

Um. I didn’t call anybody either of those things.

            • No, no. I wasn’t saying you did. That is how Tac responded to you. I removed it and edited the post because it was unnecessary.

      • Luna Kazemaru

        aka you’re butt hurt

        • Tac-Mex

Erm not really, but you must admit that this company is pretty bad

          • Budgiecat

It is bad. They are just butt hurt that you’re butt hurt about it

          • Budgiecat

It is bad. They are just butt hurt that you’re butt hurt about it

      • LordKaiser

Negative votes just mean disagreement in this case. Nothing to make a huge deal about as I get negs all the time except the Unreal 4 thread that everyone who was not impressed by the engine receive negs on their comments but no one made a comment defending the engine.

Complaining about it makes things worse…

  • Adol Christian

    April 1st really……

    • FreesunQuatro

I’ve just imagined Vaan from Final Fantasy XII yelling “Don’t believe in Square’s lies!”

      • Zerosion

Haha, I just went through that part in FF12 an hour ago. Re-playing it lately.

      • AdamBoy64

Lolz. I’ve never played FFXII, but know of that part from the FFXII sketch that Mega64 performed.

    • LordKaiser

      But that’s tomorrow.

NVM I forgot that they live 1 day in the future.

  • FreesunQuatro
  • Bloodios

It’s April Fools, fools. You think I’ll be fooled by this, fools? Well, I ain’t no fool.

    • Tetsu

but it’s…not april fools yet! So guess we’ll see if they troll us again lol.

      • FreesunQuatro

You know… In Japan it’s April Fools so maybe they already started.

  • Duc PC-QB

We hope you enjoy our Fish
    Please be exited !

  • $29082171

What a joke of an anniversary.

  • BadGenome

    Collaborations like… Final Fantasy Musou!

    • Casval

      I’ll prefer Final Fantasy Basara.

  • Jared Carter

Here’s what you should do from a fan who still believes in you.

~Just give us solid information on FF15.
~Give us a second Chrono sequel.
~A full fledged FF Tactics for PS4.
~Start work on Kingdom Hearts 3 for PS4.
~Remake in HD or create a whole new Secret of Evermore.
~If your going to revisit the past and milk Final Fantasy. Then completely update in full HD with the Agni’s Philosophy engine Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9. Package them together as a triple pack and sell it for $100.
    ~Make new, and original IPs!!!!!

    • TensaiBaka

All i can say is WTF. This is impossible to do unless a huge company with more than 1000 employees, simultaneously working hard to the core.

      • Jared Carter

You’re exaggerating. It wouldn’t take all of that. They now own Eidos and can utilize their talent and resources.
~Final Fantasy Tactics on PS4 using sprites wouldn’t take a huge team. Just a medium sized one.
~The team working on FF15 formerly known as FFvs13 is run by Testsuya Nomura so once that team is finished they can start on KH3.
~For the 7, 8, and 9 full HD remakes half the work is done already. You have all the art, battel mechanics, designs, and all that done already. They just have update and flesh it out more. If they started today it could be done in 3-4 years. Because the reason the Final Fantasy games take so long is the art and design aspects. Every one different battle systems experiments, characters monsters, locations, and all that. With all that done it wouldn’t take as long or be as labored as usual.
~Secret of Evermore would only take about 2 ¥ears with a medium sized team depending on which direction they took.

        • TensaiBaka

As you’ve stated the time for development, I believe I was exaggerating. But only if SE heeds to your request and many others as well. :(

    • Jared Carter

~Hire new and exciting talent as your current crop of employees are…uninspired.

    • Considering recent SE’s financial figures, wouldn’t an immediate solution be more viable than pumping money into things they aren’t sure will make them money?

Never played the series, but a Chrono sequel would need to be well thought out since a sequel that falls below fans’ expectations would do more harm than good – better to have a cherish series than a tarnished one.

Originality in games today are far and few between them, in my opinion. With new IPs brings with it a lot of risk.

      • Jared Carter

Yes a bad Chrono game would hurt them. If they went along the same path as Chrono Cross did then they’d be good.

New IPs would be very risky but all they have to do is look at what everybody else is doing and do something different. Don’t mimic what you see other devs doing. Also don’t keep looking into your past trying to use the same themes, character types, and story arcs.

But a solution to their problems would be to get their fans involved. Put some polls up, take some questionnaires, and just do some research amongst their fans and former fans. As we all would like to see them making top notch games again. It’s one of the reasons we all keep coming to these Square articles. We still have hope they’ll turn it all around.

    • DesmaX

They should also start breeding chocobos

      • Solomon_Kano

        Hey, not before Moogles!

    • Final Fantasy Tactics prequel where you play as a young Orlandu before he completely wrecked face

      • Jared Carter

Good idea. But I’d rather a new world not in Ivalice. I’m tired of visiting that place. They’ve used that world in 5 games now. They could bring a young Orlandu through as a hidden secret character much like Cloud, Beowulf, Reis, and Worker-8.

  • LordKaiser

Remake FF5 and FF6 (Not with Amano’s art on game play plz.). Release FFI-FFVI remastered on PS3.

  • Ace

On this anniversary, they decided to troll everyone by releasing games no one asked for and they continue that tradition today. Happy anniversary Squeenix.

  • Tac-Mex

I think you have 3 different Square Fanbases. (Strong opinions follow.)

    >SquareSOFT fans
People that know, played, and loved all of their pre merger games. They noticed the swift decline after joining with Enix and no longer even pay attention to SE and what they put out. They know that Square is incapable of making good games anymore as all their old talent is gone.

    >FF7 was my first FF fans
They act cling tightly to the new FF games and Kingdom Hearts, they occasionally namedrop other Square games but have never actually played them. They believe SE can make good games if they throw enough money at them and will continue to buy their products forever.

    >FF13 was my first FF fans
Even worse, they don’t like anything pre FF13 (although sometimes like FF12) and have never heard of SquareSoft.

Personally there are a ton of games I would like to see made, the problem is SE literally couldn’t do it, they don’t have the talent anymore.

Moderator – I edited this comment a bit, so that it won’t turn into a complete flame war of responses.

    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Oh someone seems all upset because ff changed, sorry but I am seriously tired of the anti ff7 fans.FF7 is an amazing game,as was 8-12.

6-1 were good with certain ones being better then others but as a whole they don’t compare to 7-9.

    • FreesunQuatro

Still seems pretty offensive to me. The generalization of fanbases can be really bad.

      • I appreciate the feedback, I try to suggest — to take things easy to being with. I only want to get a point across, not make someone feel like they are being censored. My goal is to never do that, not unless what is posted is just unacceptable. (I hate clicking delete, I really hate locking threads, and I think bans should be a last resort. I try my best to avoid having to do any of those. It doesn’t always work out I hate to say.)

I want to be a user first, moderator second. It isn’t always easy to do, and approaching comments from multiple perspectives like I do makes things tough. The thing is, I don’t want to be an “enforcer”, or act like some sort of “police officer of the comments section.”

I hope that gives you some insight as to how I approach moderating comments. I always appreciate feedback though. I really do. I want everyone to feel comfortable posting comments here, so getting feedback is great. Thanks.

  • new_tradition

A Square and Enix collab? Is that what they mean? All I can think is another Itadaki Street game, lol…

Though the April 1st date is suspicious, but I’ve seen legit news/announcements on that date from Japan, so it may actually be something to expect.

EDIT: Oh, I just realized the April 1st date is just about the anniversary itself, nothing about things to expect, so we might not hear about what they’re planning for a while. Hrmm…

    • new_tradition

Why’d they take the notice down? There was nothing suspicious about the announcement to think it was a prank O.o

  • rockman29

“The anniversary referred to in the text is that of Squaresoft and Enix’s merger to Square Enix on April 1, 2003.”

They did not merge as far as I know.

What I understand is Enix purchased Squaresoft.

It was sold as a merger, and the press didn’t know the difference at the time. The assumption was Squaresoft was still a healthy company at the time. Which was not that case at all.

  • Look, we haven’t had issues like this in a while, but I’m a little upset in some of the comments here. Especially the ones trying to call people out as fanboys and stuff, they are pointless and only result in getting others angry and upset, basically – they are flame posts. Please, don’t post those type of comments. We don’t like those comments, and our community here at Gematsu is better than that.

You can easily discuss the past, present, and future of Square-Enix without making a post like that. Thanks. =)

    • Xenovelgr

It happens everywhere on the internet whenever Square Enix is brought up. Something about them really pisses people off.

      • I suppose that is true. I just believe we can be one of the exceptions here. We have done so before, we can do it again. =)

I understand the reason behind it, people get passionate when discussing Square-Enix. It’s a topic that people have very strong opinions about, which is a good thing.

Things go bad when people let that passion turn ugly. I like to think cool heads can prevail, and people can discuss it without that passion getting ugly.

You know, without all the flame war junk. It’s easy to start a flame war, or post something derogatory. The funny thing is, that stuff typically all ends the same way. It’s hard to have a mature discussion, to get a point across, when everyone involved is cussing each other, and being disrespectful.

        • new_tradition

IMO, I always find one of the biggest sparks of flame wars in when people start stating opinions as fact. “This game was hated by everyone”, “everything in the series sucked after this game”, “if you liked those designs, you’re an idiot”, etc, etc.

I think it indirectly (or directly) insults the people with opposite opinions, and in turn can cause some to retaliate, and then the back and forth starts.

          • FreesunQuatro

I think the worst people can do is generalize about fanbases. Rather than attacking a game, they say that anybody who prefers FF7 is a fanboy and will not accept anything else.

  • Prodigy-X

Final Fantasy Versus XIII PS3 = Final Fantasy XV PS4

  • I guess I’ll post one of my opinions here. I’ve already discussed a bit about the company in the Wada stepping down thread.

I just hope Versus 13 is coming soon. If you decided to change the title, that’s fine. I just think it’s very important for the company to be able to move past the Versus project. The fans have been waiting patiently, and I can only imagine that releasing the game would relieve quite a bit of stress.

In other words, completing 13 Versus, a game you announced in 2006, would be a great step in the right direction. It’s a win-win.

    • KnifeAndFork

Versus is what everyone is waiting for. We could use a time machine and erase XIII-2 XIV 1.0 and XIII LR and the status would still be the same: people want Versus and that is the game that can potentially put S-E back on the map

  • AnimusVox

SE: We appreciate all your support…*wait for it* April’s Fools, we don’t care about you.

  • Starlord

April 1st 2003 is when Square and Enix Merged 10 years go, it’s an actual fact

    • Bloodios

Anniversary or not, announcing on April Fools’ Day that they’ll bring news that would make everyone happy sure reeks of fishiness.

      • Starlord

A Game company or any company for that matter, can’t be saying they are going to release something, then go back on their word because of a day they probably don;t even recognize as April Fools day. A company has to be professional in there work towards their customers, Within the company sure they can say stuff from employee to employee. But from company to Customers? It’s not professional, and I don;t see them doing that at all.

  • Elvick

I don’t see why people latch onto the merger to complain about quality. (especially considering their handheld offerings have remained awesome and in some cases been better than pre-SE merger like Birth By Sleep)

I guess you gotta blame something for it.

  • Always and forever my favorite game maker : Square Enix.
