Sony teases “highly significant” unannounced PS3 games

LittleBigPlanet 3 and Gran Turismo 6 would surely be significant.

PlayStation 4 is just over the horizon with a holiday release date, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end for PlayStation 3 (as many of you may recall with the PS2 to PlayStation 3 transition). Sony has said there are “highly significant” unannounced PlayStation 3 games still in the pipeline.

“I’d point to the software line-up on PS3 that we have coming up – God of War: Ascension next month, The Last of Us, which is looking great, and Beyond later in the year,” Sony Computer Entertainment Europe President and CEO Jim Ryan told PlayStation Blog.

“And there’s other stuff yet to be announced, which is highly significant too. There’s a lot coming on PS3 and it’s going to be very important to us for some time yet.”

Could he be referring to LittleBigPlanet 3? Or Gran Turismo 6, perhaps?

Persona 5 would be significant too…

    • Solomon_Kano

Considering this comment was from a Sony exec and his examples were first party games, I wouldn’t get my hopes up for that. Not that it isn’t possible, just that he wouldn’t be the one to tease that.

  • MrRobbyM

There’s no way it”s GT6 unless it’s in the works for PS4 and then ported to PS3. LBP3 is definitely more likely though I’m hoping for something completely new.

    • Solomon_Kano

GT6 has been in the works since 2010, so not that farfetched that Sony would release it on PS3. 10 year life cycle and whatnot.

I see them capping the PS3 off with one last GT before they set Polyphony loose on next gen hardware.

      • MrRobbyM

Oh O_o I actually didn’t know that. Which is weird. Feels like yesterday that GT5 was released with that hilarious Kevin Butler commercial. But if it’s been in the works since 2010, then it makes much more sense.

        • Solomon_Kano

Yea, before 5 came out the studio head said in an interview that they’d already begun work on 6. He noted the time 5 took though, saying it may be a bit before we actually see it. Well, Driveclub is already set for PS4. Sony isn’t stupid enough to pit its new racing IP against GT on PS4, so I’m thinking it’ll be for PS3 next year.

          • MrRobbyM

Gotcha. Though one thing that baffles me. Why would Sony make another realistic racing game? I realize the gameplay is a bit different than GT, but I would figure they would make it more of a kart racer or something like Blur. Something more fun and less boner-inducing for car enthusiasts.

            • Solomon_Kano

Yea, I don’t really get it either. It’s like Capcom announcing Deep Down as a new IP. Couldn’t that have just been the next Dragon’s Dogma? I don’t know what either was thinking.

              • Should have announced as the sequel to Dragon’s Dogma… That would save all of us the trouble of guessing…

                • Solomon_Kano

Well, there was never any point in guessing since they said it’s a new IP. I just think it’s stupid to make their new IP so similar to the last new IP they came up with. Both won’t last. One will be more popular and they’ll kill the other. Like how SF took up too much attention for Darkstalkers and Rival Schools to last.

                  • MosquitoLemon

Errr… I don’t know much about Darkstalkers, but the last Rival Schools game is from 2001. SFIV didn’t come out until 2008 (and I don’t count SFIII because it bombed until late in its life when people actually learned how to play/appreciate it). So Capcom basically sat on nothing for 7 years… not exactly one IP killing another (though I understand your point).

      • Budgiecat

hopefully the cars won’t sound like vacuum cleaners anymore and they won’t go cheap on the in dash view graphics

        • Solomon_Kano

I’d imagine GT6 will be more like going from 3 to 4 than 4 to 5, so they’re probably focused on polishing stuff like that from 5.

  • Raiyu

    Yakuza 5? :)

    • Archvile78

That be too good to be true, but its probably gonna be one of their “high profile” exclusive.

      • Raiyu

A man can dream. I just need my yearly fix of Yakuza :(

        • Archvile78

so do i friend, so do i.

  • I’m still on that borderline for sony again this gen or microsoft. If one of these games is an awesome Gundam game then there ya go. Gundam Crossfire and 0081 played a big role in me getting a ps3 this soon to be past gen.

  • Final Fantasy Versus XIII?

    I mean, it was announced, but… C’MON!

    • Souji Tendou

Your avatar disagree. Grumpy cat would’ve said “NO.”

    • zakou

    • ShinAsura

      Rumor states PS4 port

    • First game that came to mind.Versus needs to cross platform to please the fans for it on PS3 and deliver a high end version on PS4 :)

    • You said it yourself, it was already announced. I’d just forget about that game if I were you :P It’s not like they’ll show it and then release it a few weeks later, you have at least another year of waiting after the re-reveal.

  • Ni

GT 6 for me or maybe anything special (i want to be wrong)

  • Solomon_Kano

Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, and Quantic Dream have games this year. That’s 3 of Sony’s biggest doing games the year the PS4 launches. San Diego’s latest MLB: The Show is coming too. Guerrilla, Evolution, and Sucker Punch are busy working next gen. So that leaves us Polyphony, Media Molecule, Japan Studio, and Bend possibly working on PS3 games still (with there already being two Japan Studio games announced for the year). That said, Yoshida just told us that all of WWS is working on PS4 games too…

So, yea, unless he’s teasing third-party releases as well, I’m not sure what else is coming. GT6 is the only one I can really see. Ready at Dawn’s also been working on a AAA console game since Ghost of Sparta, but Ru showed up in the PS4 dev video so I’m thinking those guys are headed next gen too. Hm.

Well, I’m sure we’ll learn what else they’ve got come Gamescom. E3 is almost sure to be all about PS4.

    • sherimae1324

sony bend is making a AAA game for the vita oni-chan remember? and they are not a big studio so i doubt their making ps3 game as of now

      • Solomon_Kano

Ah. True. They’re also working on PS4, if Yoshida truly meant that every studio was working on PS4. So, yea, they wouldn’t have the manpower for a PS3 game on top of all of that.

    • What about Guerrilla Cambridge? They are working on Killzone Mercenary right now… And they don’t seem like they can house two teams working on each…

      • Solomon_Kano

Cambridge is far too small. Mercenary started as just them before Guerilla staff came on with them, so they definitely don’t have the staff for a PS3 game.

Edit: Oh wow. Just found out about Cambridge now being Guerrilla Cambridge. Yea, their new focus is said to be Vita games and continuing to assist on mainline KZ.

    • Japan Studio has Puppeteer and Rain for PS3. Plus Knack for PS4 and the games they’ve got a hand in on Vita.

      • Solomon_Kano

Yea, Rain and Puppeteer were the two PS3 games I referenced. I forgot about their Vita work though. In addition Soul Sacrifice on Vita, Team ICO’s part of Japan Studio and they’ve still got The Last Guardian for who knows what platform now.

Ah, there’s also London Studio. They’ve got Wonderbook, but they probably have something else in the works. Then again, that something else is probably for PS4 since they do PSEye work and Sony’s promoting that again.

  • Aldridge517

…Half Life 3? Although I kind of want whatever it is to be a new IP

  • Koatl

Final Fantasy IX was released on PS1 several months after the release of PS2. It was the last core Final Fantasy for the system. Same with Final Fantasy XII, which was released months before PS3. Both games were directed by Hiroyuki Ito. Final Fantasy XV is coming out, for PS3, directed by Ito.

    • Raiyu

But they already announced a new Final Fantasy for PS4.

      • For all we know it’ll be VS XIII renamed XV and it’ll release on PS3 and PS4. Hell, it could be FFXIV or a port of all the FFXIII games bundled in one.

Could be anything, “a FF” isn’t very exciting considering how it could blow up in our face.

        • Raiyu

I dunno, I think it would be pretty dumb to announce a new FF at a PS4 event, then turn around and say its for PS3 as well at E3. Something like that they could’ve said at E3 instead of announcing it now.

          • It’s pretty dumb to come on stage with a year old tech demo, then have nothing to actually say other than “a FF” is in development on PS4.

When it’s a given announcement that “a” FF will eventually be made on next gen hardware.

            Yet all that happened.

            • Raiyu

But like I said, they could have saved that for E3 instead of announcing it now. But they chose not to. Not to mention they could have mentioned it was coming to PS3 at the meeting instead of waiting till E3 to do that because they have nothing to hide but they didn’t.

    • YangTerlupakan

oh come on, no new FF main title until LR:XII out
even now versusXIII still in dev hell

FF XV for PS3 is very unlikely, for PS4 yes, just back in 2011, when XIII-2 annocuned, SE make decision make XIII-2 rather than make XV

      • Koatl

Makes sense. I’m clinging to the hope that Ito has been working on something. Dude has been MIA for way too long.

  • Sony did support the PS2 after the PS3 released after all….

  • Freesun4

    Come on Sony! Surprise me!

  • KurisuMakise

This is great, as I will keep my PS3 connected for some years past PS4’s launch no doubt. However, it’s a shame they can’t put this same type of effort onto Vita = (Sorry I had to be the one to bring that up too)

  • Dean Winchester

    Uncharted 4 please.

    • Solomon_Kano

If it happens it won’t be on PS3. Naughty Dog’s Uncharted team is working on a PS4 title according to Yoshida.

  • Shame that Sony keep forgetting their own stuff. Puppeteer is still coming too. ):

  • PrinceHeir

ehh i’ll believe it when i see it sony!

  • zakou

Why would people want GT6? GT5 already uses full power of the PS3 and notice i never say that, but it is true, GT5 is really one of the games that uses full PS3’s potential.

What else would you want? Like seriously isn’t 1000+ cars and highest PS3 graphics possible enough? The only thing that can change GT is PS4. But right now I’m even surprised myself how good GT5 looks on PS3.

    • MosquitoLemon

Yeah, GT4 was definitely the one game that used the PS2’s full potential, and you may be right about GT5 and the PS3. But who knows, they always promise Pike’s Peak whenever a new GT is announced, yet it never ends up in the final product. Needs more power?!!?

    • Well it’s the main franchise on every Playstation Console.
I wish they will make another gran turismo for PS Vita

      • Given how long it took to get GT on PSP, I’d assume we won’t see one right away. I highly doubt it’ll take as long as it did for PSP though.

    • Grant Turismo 5 MIGHT have used the platform’s full potential, but it was definitely not a fully-featured game. There’s way too much content borrowed from previous games in the series (specially the hundreds of cars from the PS2 and PSP versions), which ultimately makes for a visually incongruous game.

Grant Turismo 6 would be in the perfect condition to improve on those flaws, using the content from GT5 and building from there.

      • zakou

Good point, the question is, are they willing to do all that work?

  • anders gjerløw

ohh god let it be vs13 or atleast gt6.

  • Whatever it is I’m excited for it.

  • Maybe those 3 Games from Cellius that were announced but never came out

  • The Last Guardian!!!
