Shin Megami Tensei IV

Atlus debuted the third trailer for Shin Megami Tensei IV during a 3DS-focused Nintendo Direct this morning. Over 400 demons are set to appear throughout the game. Players can recruit and fuse these demons to create more powerful ones. You can watch the new trailer, followed by additional gameplay footage, below.

  • I’m actually kind of disappointed…

The production values look pretty low. Those cutscenes, and especially those battles, just look fairly cheap. It’s weird to see “Shin Megami Tensei IV” have production values so far below those of the Persona series.

I may still get it, though. I’m a sucker for interesting JRPGs. I guess I just expected too much in terms of presentation! The game itself might be brilliant.

Even the persona series are not so incredible in term of graphism, so on 3DS you can expect much on this point, but you can be sure the game itself will be deep and great story and gameplay, far more important for an RPG, in my opinion of course.

    • PrinceHeir

      yeah i agree.

even compared to the PS2 games, this seems lacking in terms of presentation.

either way, i know the game is gonna be awesome.

i wonder how the story will fare well?

plus voice acting in a SMT game?

      ins’t that a first :)

    • Niyari

what do you expect? the 3DS isn’t exactly a powerful system, and if they want to fit in a big game, graphical compromises have to be made somewhere.

      • Heistt

That’s no excuse, Etrian Odyssey 4 which is also done by Atlus, has 3D models for battles. Youkai Watch has both 3d exploration and 3d battles and it looks really nifty.

        • Budgiecat

Just about to state this too

      • The 3DS may not be that powerful, but there are a loooot of PSP and 3DS games that have immensely higher production values than what we are seeing here.

    • MosquitoLemon

I actually think it looks pretty good, though honestly I think they should have stuck with static enemies like Devil Survivor… I can admit that enemies with 3 (rather choppy) frames of animation look cheap. The demon close-ups and interface look really nice though.

      • They should have character models with legitimate animation, in my opinion. And I really hate the use of first-person turn-based combat as a way to avoid having to animate attacks. v_v

The whole thing just feels so low-end.

  • GetOffMy_Lawn

I love that it looks like they’re playing with the timeline again. I’m playing Devil Summoner on the PS2 right now, and I’m loving the “not-so-historically-accurate” setting. Definitely one of my most highly anticipated games right now.

  • MagoIichi

The only thing that bothers me is the first person battle system, if it was done like the DQVII 3DS or Youkai Watch 3DS game, that’d be cool.

    • Budgiecat

I agree. Especially when you traverse in 3rd person anyway.

    • Yeah, it’s really lazy and makes the battles feel like they won’t be as enjoyable to watch… Which is important when a game has you spending 100 hours in battles.

  • Well…I think it looks good. That’s my opinion though.

  • new_tradition

    Diggin’ the music a lot.

  • Budgiecat

Really wish the enemies were 3D rendered….

    • I’d say the sprite looks better than the 3D model. but each to his own.

    • Yeah, this is amazingly cheap. I lost a lot of excitement for this.

  • Eclipse

I still can’t believe that SMT III: Nocturne Had it’s 10th anniversary yesterday… I’m just glad that SMT IV is being released this year, because ten years is a long time to wait for a sequel! >_<

  • Oh god Iwata says absolutely nothing of importance for minutes.
“You can talk to demons! You can fuse them”
Good lord I never expected that from Shin Megami Tensei!
