"You can go offline totally," confirms Worldwide Studios boss.

PlayStation 4, announced last night in New York City, will not require an internet connection or block used games, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed.

“Used games can play on PS4,” Yoshida told Eurogamer.

Asked whether the system requires an always-online internet connection, Yoshida said, “You can play offline, but you may want to keep it connected. The system has the low-power mode – I don’t know the official term – that the main system is shut down but the subsystem is awake. Downloading or updating or you can wake it up using either the tablet, smartphone or PS Vita.”

If it wasn’t clear, he reiterated. “You can go offline totally. Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social! So if you don’t want to connect to anyone else, you can do that.”

PlayStation 4 is due out this holiday.

With every bit of news the PS4 is sounding better and better!

  • DrForbidden

    Check, Microsoft.

Will it be Checkmate soon? Your move, Microsoft.

  • Yeah just like PS3, it’ll be region free too and won’t charge for multiplayer I think.

  • I figured as much, considering they never specifically mentioned it at the press conference, but the confirmation is nice.

PS4 is sounding like a winner. I’m giggling like a schoolgirl.

    • I hope we’ll get JRPGs like the PS2 days :D

      • I’m glad to see devs like Square Enix, Falcom, NIS, Namco Bandai, tri-Ace, Level-5, and a bunch of other JRPG game makers confirmed for the system. Let’s see what they have in store.

        • TGS will be fun :D

        • Bloodios

My desire to experience Persona 5 on the PS4 is so intense, it’s practically oozing out from the gaps of my rationality. Atlus better give me some update soon, because I’m losing my mind.

By the way, at the pace that Dark Souls II’s development is going, you think they might be moving it to next-gen consoles instead? I mean, they are putting together a new engine to produce more realistic visual after all.

          • Kobracon

I really hope they stick with PS3. I mean Catherine was the test for their PS3 enigne, so their good to go. PS4 would mean they have to retool their engine and that mean either a longer wait or not the best made game…

        • Milyc

That’s great. Is there a source for the confirmation, please?

        • Raiyu

I’m looking forward to that Ys HD

        • Skerj

With a now familiar architecture, we should be seeing more games from those houses. Hyyyype.

        • Many of those studios you mentioned have new impressive engines to use as well. =)

I have high hopes for Japanese games on PS4.

        • I can’t wait to see where Namco-Bandai takes the TALES series on PS4. And now we can Finally get KINGDOM HEARTS III on PS4 since it’s easy to develop for.

      • Ragiacrus

me too! hopin for suikodens, tales of series, and more JRPG ports! overall, I’m just really excited for this new generation/chapter of gaming

      • Pekola

Amen! May Sony hear you. JRPG’s en masse please.

        • Budgiecat

Will Japanese companies no longer fear making HD JRPG’s though?

      • seeing as it’s easier to develop for I do see PS4 getting more games this gen. Than last.

    • 浪黒雷 (ro-kurorai)

I’m glad I’ve built a relationship with PlayStation as PS4 looks awesome. This 26yo feels just like an excited wee laddie again. The bar has been set pretty freakin’ high. Ninty have always done their own thing and once they announce their HD heavy hitters (Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Smash Bros., new Retro IP) the system will sell. MS, however, will have to beat Sony’s announcement and I am not so certain their machine is up to snuff if all the rumors are to be believed.
Sony made everything right with PS4 and showed that they listen to criticism and learn from past mistakes. Now they just need to amp marketing up to 11 and they have a surefire hit this holiday season. I even like the new controller design, looks way more ergonomic and mightily sexy, if I may say so – and it features proper triggers.

Most PS4 rumors turned out to be true so it’s all the more depressing if Xbox fans will be forced to stay online all the time and won’t be able to trade in their games or lend them to their buddies. I guess the high piracy rate (I mean, c’mon, Gears Judgment leaked a whole friggin’ month before launch on torrent sites) was the deciding factor for that decision IF it turns out to be accurate.

Anyways, MS will have to blow me away if they want to convince me to pick up Xbox3 alongside PS4. And judging by all the rumors so far they are not really gaming/consumer-oriented with their latest console. I’m eagerly awaiting the announcement and for the sake of my fellow gamers in the Xbox camp I genuinely hope the always online, no used games rumors turn out to be bollocks or that MS decide to ditch them before officially announcing the system.

I’m as excited for the next few month as I’ve never been before. MS and Sony will finally launch heir latest machines and boy, games produced by devs who had over 6 years of experience on the current systems will be mind-blowing, there’s no denying that.

    • Budgiecat

Wait is it true that you have to show your real name on it though as your username?

      • 浪黒雷 (ro-kurorai)

The way I understood it your real name will be shown IF you link your account to Facebook. It’s highly unlikely this feature will be mandatory Remember the shitstorm Blizzard reaped when they revealed their plans to use Real-ID with Sony would reap just that and then some – people did not forget the infamous security leak, I’m certain of that.

        • rockman29

I’m gonna make a fake FB account.

I don’t use FB anyway, but I don’t mind making a fake one to contact PS4’ers when the time comes.

  • Sony not bringing this up at the conference just made it appear like they were saving the bad news for later. It’s good to have some confirmation… although this means we’ll still have online passes, and maybe even more content locked away next-gen.

  • Simmsville

You can take it offline, but then you won’t be able to use the cloud gaming feature, or social game features, or share anything or do anything that Sony was so infatuated with at the press conference making it a paperweight which plays the discs

    • I wouldn’t call a box that plays game discs a paperweight. Obviously, to do all that other stuff, you need online. Just like you’d need online to download a game.

      • Dean Winchester

It honestly boggles my mind how some people make it this far in life without being eaten by a predator.

        • Or drowning in the toilet.

        • 浪黒雷 (ro-kurorai)

Haha, that comment made my day. Now I can go to bed (or futon, in my case). Thanks Dean (awesome nickname, btw) =)

          • Dean Winchester

            I got a GED and a give’em hell attitude!

    • Skerj

o_O How exactly would you be connecting to anything when you’re offline? By your logic everything is a paper weight without an internet connection.

  • Bloodios

Oh ho ho, yes! Bonkers rumours be damned!

Now on to the last stretch: will it be region-free? Will there be premium subscriptions? Pass those and I’m biting that bait all the way.

  • “PS4 will not block used games or require online”
    Music to my ears…. ^_^

Okay, next on the list…. Is it region locked?

    • 浪黒雷 (ro-kurorai)

No fucking way will it be region locked – or so I hope! Sony have learned from their past mistakes, as PS4 is a case in point. I am convinced they won’t make a step back and re-implement that asinine region locking.

      • Budgiecat

Region lock makes no sense to me at all

        • 浪黒雷 (ro-kurorai)

Exactly. No BC makes at least sense rationally as the switch from CELL to x86 means there’s absolutely nothing in common in architecture so full emulation were required. Region locking, however, makes no sense at all and encourages mod chipping/ piracy. I seriously hope Sony do not even consider it as it was a blessing for Vita and PS3. Region-free is a huge selling point and will determine whether I’m buying PS4, or at least how soon.

  • Zappa

The PS4 will be free region too?

  • new_tradition

I’m plenty antisocial and I love the internet, lol. But the main providers in Canada (Bell and Rogers) are super pricey. So for our family, we’re always keeping track of our usage. It would suck I can’t game on a system and software I already paid for >.>

  • zangetsukakashi

Confirmed: Next Xbox to fail miserably.

  • MagoIichi

I’m glad that rumor was confirmed to be false.

  • Zohar127

That pretty much does it all for me. PS4 is the sole console I intend to buy. They nailed it. Every single aspect from the system level architecture to their simplified approach to everything, to their full fledged commitment to making a console that’s extremely easy to design for… it’s perfect. Event their indie games self-publishing is amazing.

    • AdamBoy64

      They really nailed it yesterday.
Microsoft is going to have to pull out something amazing.

  • Raiyu

“If it wasn’t clear, he reiterated. “You can go offline totally. Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social! So if you don’t want to connect to anyone else, you can do that.””

It doesn’t matter, even if you give them the option not to use it people will find something negative about it and complain :/

  • MrRobbyM

Well that’s all I needed to hear, even though I never doubted Sony. If I can get a job before the holiday, you got my money and support, Sony.

  • PrinceHeir

all it needs to confirm if it’s Region Free, multiple account systems, and what about BC hardware like arcade sticks(they’re USB) and such?

    • Raiyu

I think it’ll have multiple accounts since they said it can log you in with face recognition. Don’t think they would have that feature if it didn’t have multiple accounts.

But yes I’d like to know if I can use my arcade stick or racing wheel.

  • AdamBoy64

    This is fantastic news.
The PS4 sure looks like a winner.

  • Prodigy-X

    This is great news.

  • Can’t wait for an official price announcement.

  • Budgiecat

And now we can end that rumor nonsense thank God….

  • Syltique

I’m very anti-social! Sony has my back!

  • Learii

    how about regions locked?

  • Kobracon

Its been a long time since the PS1. Supported Sony back then, supporting it now. PS4’s looking good~ Can’t wait to see what it looks like and future of gaming!

Also that controller looks….interesting. Is that a speaker or a mic in the middle? That huge square thing looks either like it can flip open or its a speaker,,,

    • “Huge square thing” — if you’re talking about the middle of the controller, that’s the touch pad. It doesn’t flip open.

The speaker/mic is actually just a speaker. There’s a headphone jack right below the controller, though, to plug in the headset that will come bundled with every PS4.

      • Kobracon

        Whoa a headset comes with every PS4?? Wow…that sounds……expensive. I’m a little worried about the price now….

P.S. I pointed out some errors on this:
Basically just switch Deng Ai and Pang De’s names around. Also it’s Ma Chao not ‘Mao Chao’

        • It’s a wired headset. I take it it’s nothing to expensive.

Sorry about the DW8 stuff. Fixed it.

          • Kobracon

No worries! Its something only the most fervent of DW fans (read: me) would notice XD

        • It’ll probably be cheapy like the one the 360 comes with.

  • KurisuMakise

In Yoshida we trust! Though I’ll probably always have mines online thanks to the low power state, I like the convenience of just a quick button press and enjoying a suspended game. I also communicate primarily with some people only through PSN, so it’s nice to have that line of communication open.
