Capcom: ‘We haven’t seen the last of Mega Man’

"With luck, we'll be celebrating his 50th anniversary."

The future for Mega Man is brighter than it may look, according to Capcom senior VP Christian Svensson.

“I can say with certainty that you’ve not seen the last of the Blue Bomber on consoles and handhelds, and, with luck, we’ll be celebrating his 50th anniversary, including all of the games you’re going to enjoy over the next 25 years,” Svensson told the latest Nintendo Power.

“That said, an issue we’ve had in the past has been talking about games and announcing them before we’re certain they’re going to com out, which unfortunately has lead to profound disappointment for many fans. So for now, I’m going to have to stay mum about any details.”

The last two projects in the Mega Man franchise – Mega Man Universe and Mega Man Legends 3 – were canceled by Capcom.

Thanks, Rockman Corner.

oh, Capcom. It’s one thing to announce a mega man game. It’s another to deliver. I’m glad you realize that, but the fanbase doesn’t JUST want mega man games. They want GOOD mega man games. With key visionaries for the series no longer working at Capcom you’ll have to excuse some of us for being skeptical as to the quality of your hypothetical future releases.

Given their rather shaky track record with non-Monster Hunter games lately, as well as any number of controversies about their business models within the past generation (take your pick), I’d advise any mega man fans who aren’t already to be cautiously optimistic about anything Capcom says about mega man. We should reward them for doing good for the property, but we shouldn’t reward them for simply acknowledging that it exists.

Furthermore, given that Capcom’s management seems to have it out for mega man (whether you believe the theories that mega man games were canceled just to spite mega man fans and inafune for leaving or if you think they’re all tinfoil hat stuff), I wouldn’t blame anybody for being wary of supporting Capcom even if they DO announce something.

I think the best path for them to take would be to outsource to Inti Creates for a new spinoff series, rather than developing internally — I simply don’t trust current staff to have what it takes to carry the torch given that even installments created by ex-Capcom staff already had mixed reception.

    • No shit, and cause of their Greed we’ll most likely never get E.X Troopers for PS3 localized. Who cares about the 3DS version anyway.

      • gold163

It’s about showing interest in the right things. If there is a substantial effort to import EX Troopers, Capcom will notice. Why do you think they’re bringing Monster Hunter 3G over to the west? Before that announcement the series was presumed dead in regions outside Japan.

If you’re going to be so negative and spiteful of course you’ll never get anything. It doesn’t matter if it’s the 3DS or PS3 version; if enough people show an interest in EX Troopers in the west Capcom will do whatever seems to be logical from a financial standpoint and to their benefit. On the other hand if a bunch of anti-fanboys continue being so childish they will get nothing.

Wake the fuck up. You’re part of the problem.

To be fair? To my knowledge, guys like Takeshi Horinouchi are still at Capcom, and honestly, he was more involved with Rockman on a day-to-day basis than Inafune was for many years, specially after the latter continued to climb the corporate ladder at Capcom.

For example, Horinouchi’s been hankering for the likes of a proper EXE/Battle Network revival for a while. It’s just that Capcom didn’t give him much to work with, which is why they tried to make do with that slap-dash “Operate Shooting Star” for DS a few years ago (which righteously flopped).

If they actually give Horinouchi and his team the time and funding that they need, they could possibly do something great. And honestly, something like EXE would probably be necessary in order to make Rockman relevant to children again. Without the young people, a mascot series won’t have new blood to generate more sales, which is EXACTLY the kind of stagnation that plagued Rockman for the better portion of the last decade.

      • gold163

Fair enough. There’s still a lot of talent at Capcom, and I’m sure there’s a lot of enthusiasm too — but the politics are what’s getting in the way, and the people with vision don’t have the power to change the overall direction of the company.

The corporate culture needs to change if Capcom wants to be relevant again, but it won’t, because all Japanese companies traditionally operate this way in order to survive.

  • So does this mean they have more games to can? Can’t wait to see what we won’t be getting.

  • Kazziyan

I need my Megaman Zero. :p I don’t care for the blue one.

    • holly

I agree. But i prefer Zero from the Zero series and not the X Zero. Dunno, but in my opinion he is way more cuter. Also Ciel <3 Mega Man Zero 3.5 would be nice. I need an explanation why the guardians were missing in the 4th.

      • Tre W

Well, no need to wait on that! Various production material and source material confirmed that the Guardians all died shielding Zero from the resulting explosion after Omega went kaboom. Though it is odd that the 4th game never made even a passing reference to how Zero owed his life to Harpuia and co. Probably another sign that MMZ4 was just rushed out while Inti was already working on ZX for DS.

        • Kazziyan

I loved MMZ4. Still has the greatest final boss theme ever and shall never be topped for me.

But ZX needs to be wiped out of existence. Wish my brother never bought that.

          • fallen

Sweet almighty lord baby jesus who art in heaven hallowed be thy name, did you just bash MMZX? How and why!?

You… did hear the airship music, didn’t you??

            • Kazziyan

I have nothing against the music, but if you were going to use the Megaman Zero name in someway- please don’t make something that I consider a heretic of a game!

Biomodels? seriously? yuck. Spiritual sequel or not! Possibly the only good part about it was Omega Zero.

Sorry, I’m just a diehard MMZ fan. xD Should’ve just made it a new MM title in general.

      • Kazziyan

Ciel is the first waifu I ever had. <3

Yeah MMZ is who I meant! he's all around better in that era!

  • Release Megaman Legends 3 an’ all will be forgivin’ ya stubborn humies.

Edit: strike dat, dey need to make more Breath of Fire an’ Misadventures of Tron Bonne games, DEN all will be forgivin’

    • gold163

Inafune has stated that he would like to see MML3 done, but Capcom is the major force holding it back, and I doubt they would want to collaborate with Inafune in order to see it finished. Besides, I thought Capcom allegedly destroyed all the work that had been done so far on MML3 anyway?

By the way, if Capcom is going to make more Breath of Fire, you can probably expect an outsourced grimdark reboot third person shooter with tons of DLC :>

The biggest problem with Capcom is that they don’t seem to know or care what the fans want. I’d attribute this to the corporate culture, where even the producers like Ono have relatively little power over what the company does overall. I doubt that higher management really understands Capcom’s western fans. All they seem to know for sure is that Monster Hunter makes a lot of money and westerners are willing to throw money at Resident Evil.

      •  which is why dey haven’t been forgiven by da fans of dose gamez now ain’t it?

        • gold163

what’s that? I can’t hear you over the sound of Resi 6 breaking another sales threshold JINGLE JINGLE JINGLE that is the sound of yen being poured into swimming pools by the truckload

          • yeah, Resident Evil Fanz.

Breath of Fire fanz have been abandoned an’ dey practically scorn the Megaman fanz.

  • This is one of does series which people have expected.. and than ask for..than demanded and never got. Many of ..err.. all of us have waited so long that all hope was lost for the real Capcom ever coming back and giving us Megaman. This changes nothing I have lost all hope of ever getting anything from Capcom and Square Enix. Wont wait for any news or want anything from them anymore until the day does games are out and I walk into a gamestore and see them there until than its all empty words so why bother. Moving on.

  • Learii

no Keiji Inafune no new mega man

  • ……………………………………………………………………………………………………..Fucking show then, don’t tell.

And for fuck’s sake; NO DISC-LOCKED DLC.

  •  I’ll believe in Capcom when we’ll get a real Megaman game. With no DLC please.

  • LordKaiser

I’ll believe it when I see it. And it needs to have a good gamplay with solid cøntrols and exellent stage design or else I’ll pass.

  • Lee

I don’t know…it’s hard to top Megaman Legends 3, to be honest.

  • really CAPCOM its hard to believe you when you talk shit and disprove everything with your GREEDY business practices.

    • well, a lot of people still buying capcom products, like you or not

  • epy

So… they’re teasing Megaman Xover for Android?

  • CAPCOM = Biggest Douchebags of this Generation.

Square-Enix = company that blabs their mouth off and doesn’t give a literal shit about their fans one bit.

    • and you are a cheap hater, because both companies did great in this gen with a lot blockbusters titles that many loved.

  • Marco Tinè

Sorry Capcom, but my interest in the series waned right after you screwed up with Megaman Legends 3. Bring it back on a proper console/handheld, or the matter is closed as far as I’m concerned.

  • Solomon_Kano

Let’s see where this goes. I’d have rather Sven not said anything and it just happened when it happened, but what’s done is done.

Megaman is dead and Capcom revived it on iPhone.

  • Rezar

I already read about Capcom’s plans for Mega Man in Nintendo Power’s latest issue. Apparently Capcom wants to bring Mega Man 1-6 from the NES to the 3DS Virtual Console and maybe have Mega Man 5 for Gameboy released as well. I do hope Capcom does something with the Blue Bomber besides releasing past Mega Man titles.

  • It wouldnt surprise me if they try to go the route of dark, gritty megaman. It would be horrible if they tried to make it like Gears of War or like action movie Resident Evil 6

  • KingOptimusOrigins111

Yes we have, because we all know they going to take ages to bring it back.

  • HeatPhoenix

    Rockman X Over 2!!!!

  • Kobracon

Careful, Capcom. Hurt me once, shame on you. Hurt me twice, shame on me.

  • PrinceHeir

i believe it when i see it capcom
