Oddworld Inhabitants and Just Add Water lifted the lid on its high-definition remake of Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee at the Eurogamer Expo in London today.
Officially titled Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee New N’ Tasty!, the game is played largely like the original, save for some technological improvements, balance enhancements, and a quick save system. Flip screen scrolling is gone, and subtle camera movements have been added to display more of the environment. Around 80 to 90 percent of the puzzles are the same, as the removal of flip screen called for some changes to be made.
“In the original game, the fifth screen into it, there was a sleeping Slig. When you walked into the screen he woke up. To reset it you just walked off screen and came back on screen again creeping,” Just Add Water boss Stewart Gilray told Eurogamer. “We don’t have flip screens any more, so we’ve made it so he times out. Say he walks around for 10 seconds and you haven’t moved, he won’t have heard anything and will go back to sleep again.
“It’s little things like that. We’ve not changed it. We’ve just modernised it because it’s not a flip screen game any more.”
Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee New N’ Tasty will launch for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, and PS Vita in spring 2013. View the first screenshots at the gallery. Watch the first footage below.
