Former Atlus and Imageepoch dev now assistant director.

Kazuya Niinou, who directed Etrian Odyssey and Trauma Center during his time at Atlus, and 7th Dragon and Black Rock Shooter: The Game during his stint at Imageepoch, has joined Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIV team as assistant director, he has said on Twitter.

Niinou added that after undergoing an operation during which one of his internal organs was removed, he decided that continuing to work as a game director would be too severe. He now works under Final Fantasy XIV director and producer Naoki Yoshida, who he praises as a “magnificent boss” and one he plans to learn from.

Thanks, Hachima Kikou.

This game gets better every week it seems

  • I’m really impressed by how Square Enix has handled the rebirth of FFXIV.

  • Awesome news. I hope he enjoys working on XIV.

  • Lee

Part of me wants Final Fantasy XIV to be a rags to riches story.

  • Vampiric

he went from winers to losers

  • How they’re attempting to fix XIV is incredible – the passion that Yoshida has for the game, his willingness to make radical changes and the way he listens to the playerbase are the exact things that are needed in a good MMO, and he has them in spades. Adding another extremely talented and very experienced developer can only make things better too!

Even in the 1.0 state, the work done by Yoshida’s team to bring it up to snuff is obvious and huge in scale. I have nothing but respect for this dev team – and FFXIV deserves success after all the work they’ve put in to it :)
