  • I honestly expected a lot more for Dragon Quest X, given that it’s Dragon Quest and all.

Yeah, me too, but arent MMO’s kinda a slow churning mechanism in Japan too?  Especially considering this is an MMO on the Wii which is pretty much dead and gone in Japan, there hasnt been a major title for Wii in Japan in forever.  Then you also have to consider that some may be waiting on the WiiU version, but regardless, if even half of them stay connected and play for a year, thats a LOT of money in the bank.

      • I always thought making it for the Wii and making it an MMO was a huge risk for Square-Enix, a huge risk that I don’t think the company needed to take.

People also had to buy a flash drive to install the game, and news spread quick about how it had to install for almost an hour.

Like you said, the Wii is dead (not just in Japan) more or less, they should have considered releasing it for the Vita or PS3 perhaps?

The real question is how many will pay to play the game for the next few years?

Well considering this is Japan, and they <3 DQ, I wouldn't be too surprised to see it last quite a few years there, especially the WiiU version when its released.  I honestly dont see it performing to much better on the Vita though, considering the Vita's current condition (although it would have likely been an extremely large boost in sales).

The PS3 is where the game truly would have shined/sold I believe.  They made a mistake putting it on Wii just because it was the console with the highest sales.  That means nothing if third party software doesnt sale well.  Hopefully the WiiU version'll breathe new life into the game, because if not, I dont see it lasting more than 4-5 years.

          • I think the vita is just a game or so away from taking off in Japan. A new Dragon Quest could have maybe been that game.

Personally, I’m hoping they release DQ X for the PC, I might get a shot at playing it one day if they do.

Edit: Sal showed me that Wii U version is listed on main website page. I believe now. =P

Dragon Quest X looks so bad. Worse graphics than DQVIII and an even worse framerate (from the footage that I’ve seen). And to top it off, the CG trailer/opening looks like it could be real-time on PS3/360. I want a high-def Dragon Quest. :(

    • The screens on their live cam on the game’s official site look much better than the ones they released while the game was coming out. No jaggies, or anything:

I wonder if it’s maybe because they’re using a component cable?

      • DarthBrian

         Or maybe those are bullshots?

I wouldn’t mind seeing some direct feed video. Everything I’ve seen so far has been off a stream so…perhaps it’s cuz of that? *shrug*

        • Can’t be bullshots. They update every few seconds.

  • A couple really interesting things to note:

3DS – The LL truly hasn’t replaced the OG 3DS in the eyes of consumers at this point. It truly is a new SKU that people are excited about, with OG 3DS holding firmly around 42k. It will be interesting to see where the LL settles and if it just becomes a permanent bump in 3DS total sales.

Wii – Obviously the bump is huge. The Wii COULD be on track to have a bigger year in 2012 than 2011. It really hangs on when the Wii U releases. If the Wii falls back to around 10k per week after this it would need about 8 weeks to surpass last year’s total. Amazing. Also it looks like the Wii will be hitting the 100 million mark in no time. Well good job Nintendo.

Dragon Quest X – it is now the most successful console MMO in Japan’s history. 400k is already more than the life to date FFXI sales in Japan. If they can keep half the people on subscription than the aforementioned title, it will be already a huge cash cow.

    • Interesting comment with solid information, thanks for posting. =)

An MMORPG on the Wii, while the WiiU is almost there.
    That’s really weird.
