Sega Europe closes offices in digital restructure
Sega "entering a new and exciting phase."
Sega Europe will close offices in France, Germany, Spain, Australia, and Benelux as part of a shift of focus to digital.
The company plans on publishing only select IPs, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Aliens, Total War, and Football Manager, at retail. Sega will outsource packaged distribution duties in Europe and Australia to companies such as Koch Media (Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France and Spain), and Level03 Distribution and 5 Star Games (Benelux and Australia).
“Sega is entering a new and exciting phase that will position the company as a content led organisation maximising sales with strong and balanced IP such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Total War, Football Manager and the Aliens franchise”, commented Jurgen Post, COO of Sega Europe in a statement.
“The company will benefit from a clear focus and realigned strategy for our digital business and packaged goods and we are confident that this will lead to a successful future.”
During an interview with MCV, Post said that the four IPs mentioned earlier generate 65 percent of Sega’s current business, thus making them its concentration.
“And within them we will diversify,” he added, “we really want to go broader with those titles – as we are doing already with things like Football Manager is successful on PC but also now iOS and Android, and Sonic in its many forms.”
What this means for Anarchy Reigns, now due in Q1 2013, is unknown. Perhaps it will launch as a digital release?
