Adds 90 percent more view area, longer battery.

Nintendo has announced a new 3DS model during its Nintendo Direct broadcast tonight. The new SKU, named 3DS LL, boasts a 4.88 inch upper screen and 4.18 inch lower screen, both adding 90 percent extra view area, and longer battery life. To keep costs at minimum, it will not come bundled with an AC adapter. However, it will come bundled with a 4GB memory card.

3DS LL will be released in Japan in White, RedxBlack, and SilverxBlack on July 28 for 18,900 yen.

Update 12:03 a.m.: 3DS LL is coming to North America on August 19 for $199 as 3DS XL. It will be available in red and blue.

Update 12:45 a.m.: 3DS XL will come to Europe on July 28, with a silver option also available.

Damnit! I will one day learn not to buy the first edition of a handheld. Would have LOVED a bigger 3DS. Now just gotta see if its worth it to sell mines and get one of those beauties.

  • Malcolm Reynolds

Nintendo has been lying and denying a new 3DS model for months. Now its confirmed and there is still no 2nd analog circle pad.

Dear Nintendo, pull your heads from your asses.

    No second analog, NO BUY.

    • @Malcolm Reynolds:

I imagine it’ll change come the actual release.

This is waaaaaay too big for the circle pad pro.

  • Rock Raiyu

wtf it doesn’t come bundled with an AC Adapter?

  • DarthNemesis

Nintendo always rips off people by releasing a new model of the DS.Still no second analog either.

  • Sal Romano

Announced for North America as 3DS XL.

    • milramyah

@Sal Romano: also the us version does come with an ac adapter

  • Zero

Anyone surprised? I still need to get a 3DS.

Should I get the XL when I decide to purchase one?

    • Rezar

@Zero: It depends. The Circle Pad Pro for the 3DS is a must have if you plan on getting Resident Evil Revelations or Metal Gear Solid 3D. My only complaint about the current 3DS is my L and R buttons don’t work for carrying my 3DS around so much.

Thanks for the reply. I might just stick with trying to buy the regular 3DS then. I wonder if the price will lower more when XL comes out?

  • RyoonZ

I’m comforting myself by telling my brain that this looks ugly.
    I’m in denial mode.

  • FinalFantasy_fangirl

Awesome I had planned to get a 3DS when Kingdom Hearts released now Ill get the XL. I wish a purple one was available but red is fine.

  • Malcolm Reynolds

@Ryoonz: this design is actually ugly. Cant place my finger on why but it is indeed less atrractive than its smaller cousin.

And no White model for the US?

Def a “not a chance in hell” buy.

SOO GLAD that i was not part of the people who bought 3DS version 1. I wonder what does ppl (who were so sure that nintendo would not do something like this in years)are thinking now. But still glad I waited. wth nintendo, no AC adapter and no BUILT-IN second circle pad? are they trying to make people mad?

  • FaithlessMr

The whole thing looks awful imo. But since lots of people were asking for a bigger screen, here ya go! I still think my Zelda Edition 3DS looks smexy as can be :3

Also, to anyone wishing for a redesigned version of the 3DS with a second analog…Nintendo has officially stated before that they intend for every single game released on the system to be perfectly playable with just one analog, because they see the CPP as an add-on, rather than something necessary to fully enjoy the experience with the system. That is why it is rather unlikely you’ll ever see a redesigned 3DS with a built in second analog, at least for the time being.

I gotta be honest though, the CPP more than covers my “need” for a second analog (I really don’t think it’s that necessary, it is helpful in some games like Resi Revelations, but otherwise perfectly playable without it I must say). So to anyone who feels they won’t like the 3DS because it doesn’t have a second analog…the CPP should pretty much cover your needs. And besides, it’s not like there are many games on the system that require the second analog to begin with, most if not all are perfectly playable without it, from the top of my mind.

Exception being Metal Gear Solid 3D. That game is indeed pretty much unplayable without the CPP, tried the demo with and without the add on and I decided never to play that game without the CPP again.

I think I’d rather have the purple 3DS. is that still available or was it a special edition color with a limited print run?

  • xMCXx

Why does Nintendo keep doing that?

  • howardmoonish

    Because of monies. derp.
