The Last of Us: Naughty Dog on Ellie’s change

Ellie modified to resemble younger teen.

You may have noticed some differences between the Ellie you’ve come to know and the Ellie you saw in this week’s The Last of Us trailer. (I actually didn’t.) She received a small reworking recently, and Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann has explained why.

“After delving further into the game’s narrative over the past few months, we decided to modify Ellie’s model to better reflect [actress] Ashley [Johnson]’s personality, and also resemble a slightly younger teen more fitting to the story,” Druckmann told IGN. “We’re happy with the final result shown in the cinematic we have released today, and hope the fans like her too.”

The Last of Us is due for PlayStation 3 in late 2012 or early 2013.

There’s actually only very minor changes that make “Ellie” from The Last of Us look what the creators would prefer to call “younger”, or in some people’s case, less like Ellen Page. Either way, she still looks the same, except younger! And, thanks to Sal Romano’s post, suggesting to open each image in a separate tab makes all the difference. Side by side was much more difficult to see the actual differences, as they appeared very similar. But with the ability to see them “transfuse” together, we could say, when we change tabs – because both images are more identical than most in which people would compare old & new – you can see the changes.

There’s not many dramatic changes to the character, they just make Ellie appear only a few years younger than what her “older” version looked like. My opinion, Ellie is still attractive – for what a video game character can look like. But the new and “younger” looking version now looks a little less like Ellen Page – she now has a, what seems to be, a wider structured face. Her hair is now much lighter, but not significantly different, as which is noticeable in adolescents, comparing to when they start to age, their hair tends to darken (again, another way to show youth in her character). Her eyebrows are now more thicker than the older version, again giving a more youthful appearance. And, the list goes on, with her eyes now being more “wider” and brighter in color. Her nose appears to be almost the same, but yet protruding. And, even her lips look much more fuller than before.

I don’t think this change was absolutely necessary. Their claim was so the character fit the voice actress’s personality better. Honestly, they should have just found a different voice actress and left the character be. What would have cost more, for them to change the actual game character, or to find a new voice actress – I’m not really sure. But, I have to agree with what seems to be most peoples opinion – I prefer the older Ellie much more. I do have to admit, I find Ellen Page quite attractive myself and having a video game that contains a character that looks almost like her, would definitely sway me into getting it. Not to say that I wouldn’t get it for what it is. Either way, both versions are legit – I’d just like them to bring the older version back!

“After delving further into the game’s narrative over the past few months, we decided to modify Ellie’s model to better reflect Ashley Johnson’s personality”I call bullshit. They made Ellen page and changed it when it was revealed Beyond features Ellen, they changed it. Coincidence my ass.

  • ¬¬ Ellie Page.
