Capcom and Ninja Theory gave a behind-closed-doors presentation of DmC Devil May Cry at Gamescom, where they showed the game running in real-time.
Ninja Theory co-founder Tameem Antoniades headed the talk, promising the reboot will still “feel” and “work” like past Devil May Cry games.
“We’ve got our plan and we’re not changing it,” said Antoniades to the audience. The game will “make sense” to fans “when you get your hands on it,” he added.
Despite fan backlash, Ninja Theory is confident in the game they’re creating.
“The people who are skeptical secretly want to like it, and our job is to prove it’s Devil May Cry in essence.”
The majority of the fan disapproval comes from Dante’s new look. According to Capcom producer Alex Jones, Capcom Japan had been influential in character design from the get-go.
“Character design is what Capcom Japan is deeply, deeply involved with,” said Jones. “[Ninja Theory and Capcom have had] dozens of meetings over character design.”
Unlike past Devil May Cry games, DmC Devil May Cry will not run at 60 frames per second. Antoniades confirmed the game will be “locked” at 30 frames, the reduction allowing his team to add “stuff like the world changing,” where levels take on dramatic transformations during gameplay.
Hideaki Itsuno, director of past entries in the series, will ensure the game has the “feel of 60 fps.”
“It will feel like a proper Devil May Cry when you have the controller in your hand,” said Antoniades.
Combat was shown off in today’s presentation. Expect previews to go up at outlets attending Gamescom sometime tomorrow.
