Kingdom Hearts series director Tetsuya Nomura spoke out about the future of the series to this week’s issue of Famitsu.

Speaking first about Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance for 3DS, Nomura said that development is currently 40 to 50 percent complete. He also confirmed secret movie will be in the game.

Nomura dropped a few hints about the game. Here’s one: “XXX and XXX in Traverse Town!” The XXXs are surprising elements, according to Nomura.

Kingdom Hearts 3D‘s story is puzzling, said Nomura. It will touch upon the hidden data in Sora. Teasing a bit of gameplay, he said you’ll be able to make your way up to the rooftops.

Moving on to the future of the series, Nomura said that those waiting for Kingdom Hearts III may find answers in Kingdom Hearts 3D.

Kingdom Hearts III will see the end of the Xehanort arc of the series saga, Nomura said. He has a framework for continuation following Kingdom Hearts III, where Sora will remain as the main character.

What platform will the next Kingdom Hearts release for? Nomura wasn’t asked, but Famitsu asked its readers. Here are the results:

  • 1. PlayStation 3 – 2,030 votes
  • 2. PlayStation Portable – 1,010 votes
  • 3. PlayStation Vita – 990 votes
  • 4. Nintendo 3DS – 440 votes
  • 5. Nintendo Wii U – 270 votes

Readers were also asked several other Kingdom Hearts questions. The most favored game in the series is Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix; the most favored element is story; the most favored character is Sora; and the most favored scene is the fight between Sora and Roxus in Kingdom Hearts 2.

Touching upon high-definition remakes, popularized by updates like the God of War Collection and upcoming Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, Nomura said they’re looking into high-def tech tests for older titles. He wouldn’t confirm whether we’d see a Kingdom Hearts Collection anytime soon.

Thanks, Andriasang (1, 2).

Hmph. I hope they recapture the magic of the first one. Birth by sleep was pretty close. Now KHIII should blow them all away.

dats wuts up i assume we’ll hear about KHIII later this year or early next year
    hopefully after i get a new ps3

It seems I should start saving up for 3DS then. I’m curious on how the story will continue after KH III. I always figured that it will be the end of the franchise, but it seems I’m going to let Nomura drag me back in after KH III.
Hmm, I would say my most favorite character is Riku & my favorite scene is the battle between Riku and Roxas (you spelled his name wrong).

see that famitsu’s poll nomura , we want KH in PS3 , not handheld…

  • go-go-boy

seeing how long ffvs13 is taking a kh3 is looking very distant what he needs to do is stop with the handheld crap and just give us the damn sequal.

    • DarthXehanort

@go-go-boy: Handheld crap? Does not compute.

He’s just efficiently releasing necessary chapters of the KH series in stunning quality.

KHIII would make NO SENSE without these other important sequels, after all. Don’t you know that?

Perhaps the poll should tell us why we haven’t got a Kingdom Hearts on PS3 yet. Adding up all the portables puts it over the PS3 votes by a decent amount. One would hope that by now, some of the JP gamers would be starting to move towards console gaming more.

If this poll is any sort of representation, it’s still rather up in the air when it comes to release a new game on PS3 only in Japan, over a portable release.

Let’s hope Versus break some huge records or something when it finally releases in Japan, and does better than Dissidia has been doing sales wise.

I really want to see more JRPGs coming to PS3.
