The E3-announced Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS has yet to begin development. Why? According to Project Sora CEO Masahiro Sakurai, the developer of the series, it has no development team.
“Project Sora had intended to make a 3DS Smash Bros. once it had finished up a game on the system and had gotten used to the hardware’s feature set,” Sakurai told the latest issue of Famitsu. “With the advent of the Wii U, though, we had a choice to make. [Nintendo president and CEO Satoru] Iwata asked us if wanted to make the next Smash Bros. on the Wii U or 3DS, and my thought was that we had to go on both platforms.”
Currently, Sakurai is solely focused on developing Kid Icarus for 3DS. The new Super Smash Bros. was announced early in order to recruit new staff for the development team, revealed Sakurai.
In 2005, when Super Smash Bros. Brawl was announced for Wii, the game had no development team, as well. It looks like history’s repeating itself.
Thanks, Siliconera.
