DUST 514 announced as PlayStation 3 exclusive
DUST 514 was announced as a PlayStation 3 exclusive title at Sony’s E3 press conference. It will be the first game to connect with its MMO counterpart EVE Online in real time.
“We are extremely pleased to partner with a developer like CCP, known for pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation in the MMO genre,” said Zeno Colaco, Vice President, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “We firmly believe that DUST 514 will offer the PlayStation community a unique MMO experience. This is something that can only be achieved on PlayStation and to see the possibilities unfold, especially in the area of cross platform gaming, is truly exciting.”
The game will be published by developer CCP Games. The game consists of brutal ground combat and planetary conquest. The actions players take will have a direct effect on the world and players of the EVE PC MMO.
“When we set out to build a true persistent shooter for consoles, it was evident that Sony’s dedication to providing a flexible and MMO-friendly platform –alongside a robust virtual goods business model– made the PlayStation 3 the natural home for DUST 514,” said Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP. “CCP’s ambition is to bring a level of truly meaningful, persistent gameplay to the PlayStation 3 never before seen.”
Players of DUST 514 act as mercenaries for the starship pilots of EVE. Together, players can forge alliances, conquer territories on New Eden (which is consistent and common in both games). The actions of the mercenaries can drastically change the entire game world of EVE.
The game will be distributed through the PlayStation Network, and will fully support PlayStation Move, and it’s Sharp Shooter peripheral. Eventually, the game will span across the entirety of PlayStation, having presence in PlayStation Home and on NGP.
It will launch free of charge, and will offer players the choice to purchase advanced weapons, vehicles and battle gear using in-game currency, or real money from their PlayStation Network wallets.
DUST 514 is slated for a Summer 2012 release.
