Sega‘s dished out full details on the recently trailered Sonic Generations. Due out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this fall, it promises to be the “definitive gaming experience for Sonic fans old and new,” combining both 2D and 3D gameplay elements in one.
“Sonic Generations will certainly be a fitting celebration for Sonic’s 20th Anniversary,” commented David Corless, Global Brand Director for Sonic. “By having the classic 1991 Sonic that many fans know and love team up with his modern day incarnation, we are bringing back the nostalgia of the early days of Sonic and combining it with the innovation and stunning HD technology of the modern gaming era. Sonic Generations will bring to life the last twenty years of Sonic’s universe in a truly unique and imaginative way.”
If you’ve seen the trailer, you might’ve noticed the presence of both classic and modern Sonic. There’s a story surrounding this. A mysterious new power creates “time holes” which pulls Sonic and friends back through time, facing him with his former self, Sonic from 1991. The two must band together to fight a new enemy, save their friends, and find out who is behind everything.
The 2D and 3D gameplay elements are optional. If you choose to play as Classic Sonic, you’ll play all the levels in 2D side-scrolling view. If you play as Modern Sonic, you’ll play in the 3D view you’ve seen in games such as Sonic Adventure.
It’s out this holiday season. Check out the first set of screenshots at the gallery. A new gameplay trailer can be seen below.
