Final Fantasy Type-0: latest details

Famitsu.com has gone live with their latest Final Fantasy Type-0 preview, containing most of the screenshots and details from their magazine preview earlier this week. The online reports reveals new facts about the upcoming PSP RPG.
Story
Final Fantasy Type-0 is set in the world of Orience where four countries, each with their own crystal, co-exist. These countries are called Rubrum, Milites, Anaze, and Kogai. Each country has an organized called a “Peristylium” which protects their crystals. Rubrum’s is known as Suzaku (or the magic school) and Milites’ is known as Byakko, for example. The other two countries’ Peristyliums are known as Souryuu and Genbu.
As mentioned, Rubrum’s Peristylium Suzaku serves as a magic school. The Perisylium of other countries, however, aren’t magic schools. Each Peristylium has a different form; Rubrum’s just happens to be a school. The principle of Suzaku governs Rubrum.
Anaze and Kogai, whose Peristyliums are Souryuu and Genbu, are supposed to be mysterious parts of the world. It is not clarified which Peristylium belongs to which country.
Each country’s Peristylium has their own flag and relation to Chinese mythology. They are:
- Suzaku: Vermillion Bird of the South
- Byakko: White Tiger of the West
- Souryuu: Azuer Dragon of the East
- Genbu: Black Tortoise of the North
The game’s mythology goes back to a time long ago where four lights mysteriously hit the planet. Society formed the four Peristyliums around these lights. A savior named “Agito” appeared in the world after a calamity called “Fins”. In modern day Type-0, where the four countries are deep in war, people hope for Agito come once again. The students of Class Zero at Rubrum’s Suzaku magic school hope to become the Agito.
Battle
In battle, you’ll control a party of three Class Zero students. Only one character is playable at a time, though you can switch on and off between the group. If a character dies, one of the many students in your reserve will replace them. You can keep fighting till all students have died.
During ad-hoc play, the students who replace fallen allies are controlled by human players.
On the battle screen, you’ve got your basic HP and MP gauges, commands, ability gauge, mini-map, and the number of characters you have in your reserve. In one screenshot, we see a set of commands for Queen: (X) Raise, (Square) Thunder MW, (Triangle) Mythril Saber, and (Circle) Cross. A screenshot with Ace shows: (X) Wall, (Square) Fire ST, (Triangle) Card, and (Circle) Illusion.
You don’t have to take out every enemy in battle. Enemies will either hold their weapons over their head and surrender or flee if you take out the enemy commander. Commanders are difficult to take on, however, and it’s recommended you take out the less powerful enemies first.
Each character has a special weapon in which they’ll gain abilities while using. All characters can use magic, which can be customized to change its properties.
A small tidbit: characters will speak to each other during battle. In one screenshot, text appears in the upper left of the screen that reads: “Why are you using magic?!”
Characters
Each character has their own number. Famitsu’s detailed four of them.
- No. 01: Ace – not much is said regarding Ace, though Famitsu speculates that based off his number and presence in past trailers that he may be the main character of the students.
- No. 09: Nine – a straightforward guy whose undefined words give Class Zero courage. Queen considers him stupid.
- No. 12: Queen – a calm, quiet, smart and intelligent leader type character whose glasses are considered the trademark of her appearance. She does not allow dishonest acts and is not afraid to be harsh on her allies. She’s not cold-blooded, however. She feels pain when her allies are hurt.
- Kura Same – the teacher of Class Zero. Once a student who, during his active years, was called “The Death God of the Ice Blade”. He has a small Tonberry who, in one screenshot, we see wearing a class robe and carrying a small lantern and sword.
Chocobos
Chocobos are present in Final Fantasy Type-0. During the brief TGS gameplay trailer we saw the player riding one in-game. In Famitsu’s preview, one screenshot shows what appears to be a Chocobo farm. This is part of an event scene where Ace is told by someone, “You really like Chocobos, don’t you?”
Thanks, Andriasang.
