Sony hit with inevitable ‘OtherOS’ lawsuit
We all knew it was coming. After Sony removed the OtherOS feature from PlayStation 3 with firmware version 3.21, we knew there would be someone out there who wouldn’t take it lightly.
Today, news breaks of a California man named Anthony Ventura suing Sony Computer Entertainment over the removal of OtherOS. The feature was originally touted as a big feature before the launch of the system, allowing gamers to install various types of Linux and other operating systems on their console.
Ventura’s lawsuit says Sony’s removal of OtherOS resulted in the “intentional disamblement of the valuable functionality originally advertised as available”. He believes Sony is breaking the terms of its contract, also adding that the feature was removed to prevent piracy and not for security concerns.
This may be a case where the jury will be in favor of the plaintiff. We’ll see how it plays out.
