Vanquish, the PlatinumGames and Shinji Mikami shooter for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, has received its proper first set of screenshots tonight, not counting the sets of three and five that were released before.
Vanquish revolves around an attack by Russia on the United States using a hijacked solar-powered satellite on the 51st state Providence. Russia has already attacked San Francisco, costing the US five hundred thousand lives. Under Russia’s terms, if the US doesn’t surrender, they will attack New York.
Protagonist Sam Burns comes in with an aim to recapture the hijacked satellite before Russia attacks. Using the Augmented Reality Suit (or ARS), a suit developed by Hewytt Ayumi Aerospace designed to be the most advanced battle suit in existence, he has heightened strength, faster movement, and quicker reflexes. An Augmented Reality mode similar to Bayonetta‘s Witch Time will be usable in order to slow down time. Some of the new screenshots show off this ability (like the one above this post).
The official Japanese site, which opened tonight, has given players a full background of the story (credits go out to Classy Gamer for translating).
Providence is an American space colony, built with the shape of an immense cylinder to capture the energy of the sun. It’s basically a gigantic power plant that sends energy back to Earth.
Unfortunately the station has been hijacked and the power plant has been turned into a weapon of mass destruction. The enemy used the amplified microwave energy to irradiate San Francisco causing the dead of half a million people in an instant.
At the same time in Washington the American government received an official declaration of War from Russia. An organization managed to stage a military coup in Russia and is now demanding an immediate and unconditional surrender of the United States. In case of a refusal New York would suffer the same fate as San Francisco.
As America faced it’s moment of greatest peril, a savior was chosen. Sam Burns, a war hero that experienced three conflicts and was awarded with the Distinguished Service Cross and the Silver Star. The fleet on which he’s stationed is already approaching Providence.
Burns was sent from the D.A.R.P.A. (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), an organization controlled directly by the President and by the Secretary of Defense, with the apparent mission of testing the new ARS battle suit, but now he has received a new task, to be a hero.
It’s only a matter of time before the “Star of Russia” will eventually strike on New York. The battle for the destiny of the United State has begun.
