Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear Solid series, has said at this morning’s Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker conference that the video game console is dying – making portable the way to go.
“In the near future, we’ll have games that don’t depend on any platform,” Kojima said at the conference.
“Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel — wherever they are and whenever they want to play. It should be the same software and the same experience.”
“I looked at this in part as an experiment aimed at the future,” he finished.
Sony Computer Entertainment Japan President Hiroshi Kawano called it a “bold prediction” and hopes Kojima will continue to develop for consoles.
“It’s a bold prediction,” Kawano told reporters with a nervous smile. “We hope he continues to develop for platforms, but we deeply respect his sense of taking on a challenge.”
Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker launches in Japan at the end of this month and in June out west. Another, younger team is heading the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game Metal Gear Solid: Rising, due to release sometime this year.
