Epic: “We own Gears” and “can do what we want with it”
It’s often argued that Microsoft has the bigger influence when it comes to Gears of War. It’s often believed that they own the Gears property, as well. Turns out, Microsoft has no say in what Gears does or where it goes.
“We own Gears of War. We can do what we want with it,” Epic Games vice president Mark Rein told VG247 at GDC 2010. “We have a great relationship with Microsoft, and they helped turn the game into a huge success for us, and we are pretty happy with the way things are going.”
Epic does work with publishers other than Microsoft. They’re currently working on a game for EA, rumored to be titled Bulletstorm. We’ll probably hear more about that at E3; perhaps about Gears of War 3, as well?
