This month’s issue of PC Gamer magazine features a cover story on Bethesda’s Fallout: New Vegas and thanks to some early copies, we’ve got tons of brand new information on the game.
In New Vegas, you do not play as a Vault dweller but you will receive a Pip-Boy from one. The storyline is focused on the New California Republic vs. Caesar’s Legion vs. New Vegas residents. The Hoover Dam, which is also in the game, supplies electricity to New Vegas residents. In the mag, there are no actual screenshots of New Vegas, only concept artwork.
Each of the three competitors have their own base. New California Republic’s base is the McCarran Airport, Caesar’s Legion is in the Vegas Strip, and super mutants have a base in a placed called Black Mountain. Other locations include towns named Fremont and another named Primm, a topless revenue and Area 51.
New weapons to be included in the latest Fallout include an assault rifle with the resemblance of an M4, a new big gun with a backpack but held like a mini-gun, and more. With the help of VATs, there are new special moves for melee weapons – a golf club will allow players to use a move called “Fore” which goes about like a groin shot.
Super mutants are back, bearing similarity to those in Fallout 3, plus the additions of new super mutants. Some of them are dumb while others are intelligent – like Nightkin, for example. One super mutant spotted in the mag is a female leader with a 1950s hairstyle. Geckos make a return, as well.
Karma makes a return in addition to a new reputation system. Depending on what skills you chose, it’ll have a bigger impact on conversation choices; so you’ll be able to have a conversation with someone about explosives if your explosives skill is high enough.
Also in the mag, there’s a screenshots showing a bearded man with a straw hat, a ghoul of an NCR ranger and New Vegas concept art. There’s also a mission mentioned where the player must rescue a ghoul from a group of super mutants; after rescuing him, he can become your companion. Finally, there’s some information about the NCR Ranger armor, which is similar to brown combat armor with sleeves.
