SCEA’s John Koller talks PS3 strategy for 2010
It’s no lie that 2010 is going to be one of gaming’s biggest years. With a slew of huge games hitting just in the first three months, motion controllers being introduced by both Sony and Microsoft, and potential features to be added to each console, there’s no reason to not be excited. John Koller, SCEA Director of Hardware Marketing, speaks with GamePro on 2010, mentioning big games, firmware updates and more focus on the PlayStation Network.
PlayStation 3 motion control is obviously an important piece of Sony’s 2010 strategy. Still unnamed, the PS3 wand controller should launch sometime during the year. Koller says the focus for motion control is on family gamse, mostly.
“I think the areas that are going to be really critical to our success will be family games,” Koller said, “as well as shooters and sports games. Those are going to be the areas that will really define success, because they’re areas that quite honestly, I think Project Natal and the Wii are going to have trouble matching, from a differentiation standpoint.”
Accordingn to Koller, there are three “pillars” of Sony’s 2010 strategy. Those are motion control, 3D gaming and the PlayStation Network.
“The PSN is going to be very important. We’ll add a number of very critically demanded features, and also continue to look for ways to expand on what the PS3 consumer has asked for. The PSN is really a big pillar where we’ll go. Those are going to be three big pillars as we go into 2010, motion control gaming, 3D gaming, and the PlayStation Network.”
Of course, there are the games. While Sony has games like God of War III and Heavy Rain up there sleeves, there’s even more yet to be announced.
“We haven’t really announced all of them yet, but the titles that will be launching at the time are going to be very exciting. Some of the big franchises, as well as new IPs have new ways to game, not motion control gaming, but in other ways.”
Sony sounds like they have a very interesting 2010 planned. We’ll have to wait as the year commences in to truly see what they have in store.
