Sony Files Patent for Graphics Synthesizer Emulation
A patent filed by Sony in 2007, released to the public only a few days ago, can be the final step in full PS2 backwards compatibility on the PlayStation 3 via firmware. The new patent demonstrates a method to emulate both the Emotion Engine and the Graphics Synthesizer used in the PS2.
There’s tons of information on this here, however, it’s all in Japanese. With all the rumors on the PS3 Slim and the upcoming three-hour GamesCom conference Sony’s planning, I think we may be able to expect a backwards compatibility announcement for every PlayStation 3.
