Publisher Konami and developer Atomic Games have announced Six Days in Fallujah, a third-person tactical shooter based on the November 2004 battle in the Iraqi town of Fallujah that killed 38 United States soldiers and an estimated 1,200 insurgents.
Six Days in Fallujah was brought into creation by a United States Marine returning from the 2004 Iraqi battle with video, photographs, and diaries of their experiences. They called Atomic Games, which specializes in warfare games, to turn their experiences into a game, largely because the soldiers themselves were more comfortable with playing a game rather than watching a movie or reading a book.
“The soldiers wanted to tell their stories through a game because that’s what they grew up playing,” said Konami senior brand manager John Choon.
The player takes control of a United States Marine in a four-person team, charged with clearing the city of insurgents. However, there is a separation between this game and other war games, explains Atomic Games president Peter Tamte.
“For us, the challenge was how do you present the horrors of war in a game that is also entertaining, but also gives people insight into a historical situation in a way that only a video game can provide?” Tamte said. “Our goal is to give people that insight, of what it’s like to be a Marine during that event, what it’s like to be a civilian in the city and what it’s like to be an insurgent.”
Six Days in Fallujah is scheduled for 2010. Read more about the game at Los Angeles Times.
