Donkey Kong debuts on Wii U at 36,000 sales.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca’s Wonderful Mysterious Keys

Following its debut last week, Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca’s Wonderful Mysterious Keys continues to lead this week’s Japanese game sales with an additional 118,000 units moved, Media Create figures reveal.

The 3DS title beat out Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, just launched for Wii U, which opened at 36,000 sales. Its Wii predecessor Donkey Kong Country Returns, in comparison, opened at 166,000 sales when it launched in 2009.

Hardware sales continue to remain the same, with 3DS XL returning to its regular sales range after last week’s Dragon Quest Monsters 2 jump.

    A calm before storm.

  • Unretributed

    Lacking week for sales.

  • Articuno76

Wow. How is the Vita doing so (relatively) well hardware wise but being totally demolished in software? That’s unusual.

    • ragingmerifes

That’s really weird. Usually it is the exactly opposite. I wonder if it has anything to do with the PS4…

      • XypherCode

        Yeah I think that’s it.

      • Shippoyasha

The game output is better than ever for Vita in Japan. And it is way more affordable thanks to Slim.

    • Vayne

Maybe they are buying VITA games digitally!

    • Kayseur

I agree, it’s pretty surprising to see the Vita holding so well despite the software sales, but that’s actually good.
More games are coming in the next few months though (last two were really calm), so anticipation maybe. Plus the PS4 as ragingmerifes said.

    • Elvick

It could also be people who decided to switch from the 1000 to 2000.

Hard to say exactly who is buying it, but not many retail games.

  • Guest

Maybe they are buying VITA games digitally.

    • SuperLuigi

Im guessing most are downloading free games like pso 2 and using ps plus. I have only bought toukiden and haven’t bought another game for my vita for a long time. Plus gives me enough as is.

  • SuperLuigi

Donkey Kong looks like a lot of fun. Hope it sells well in at least in the west.

    • AdamBoy64

Yes, I’ll look forward to playing that multiplayer sometime.
I enjoyed what I played of ‘Returns’, but I never bought it.

  • icecoffemix

GTAV got seriously crazy leg in Japan…

  • shogunknight

Thats quite a low start for Donkey Kong. At least WiiU went up a 1000 units

  • bloodiOS

Good, the Vita is hanging on tight despite not having new software.

  • MrKappa

DK did pretty poor but if Kirby is anything to go buy it will end up doing well in the end.

  • Daniel Masterson

It looks like FF X HD Remaster has totally dropped off the radar. I hope it sells well in the west so they really consider a FF XII remaster for PS3/4/Vita.

    • bloodiOS

I saw it sitting at 26th(PS3) and 28th(Vita) place on Media Create site:

      • Daniel Masterson

        Thanks for the link!

  • Budgiecat

Gundam Extreme VS FB & Basara 4 aren’t selling that well compared to their previous games and other games on that list. What is wrong with Japan and their crap tastes lately…

  • AdamBoy64

Another big week for the 3DS.

Hope that Donkey Kong gets on a roll.
Here’s hoping for a few more sales for Super Mario 3D world as well.

    • Auragar

Of course it is another big week, it is and will continue to be the most popular handheld (and system overall) of this generation.

      • AdamBoy64

        Yep. Good on them.
Do you know how it sells in the US?

I heard it was the best selling system in 2013, but I don’t know what the source was on that.

        • Auragar

No idea. It sells well enough it seems.

  • Elvick

Really curious to see how PS4 does. Want to see if these numbers have been low-ish because people were saving for PS4. Or just other reasons.

  • LustEnvy

People need to understand that this doesn’t account for digital game sales, which is on the rise.

I have completely stopped buying physical copies of my ps3 games, due to the expectation of being able to play them on PS4 in the future.

    • Auragar

Even if you buy your ps3 games digitally it doesn’t mean you will have them for the ps4 for the bs streaming they are trying to push on people. Just a heads up.

      • Elvick

You mean games developed for the cell processor won’t run on a system that doesn’t use the cell processor? What is this madness?

Soon you’ll tell me the PS4 can’t play VHS tapes in the disc slot.

        • Auragar

Uhm I think you misinterpreted me.

    • Elvick

      Then you’ve made a mistake.
