More details coming prior to E3.

Nintendo has entered into a worldwide partnership with Sega to release Sonic Lost World, the next entry in the company’s Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, exclusively on Wii U and 3DS, the company announced during today’s Nintendo Direct.

“Today, I would like to announce that we have entered into an worldwide partnership with Sega on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise,” said Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata. “The next game in the series, Sonic Lost World, is a brand new action-adventure platforming game that will launch exclusively on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.”

The announcement comes as part of a three-game Sonic deal with Sega, the second of which is Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, with details of the third Sonic title to be announced at a later date.

Iwata promises more details prior to E3. View the first screenshot at the gallery.

I guess this will be similar to the Sonic Colors situation, and the PS4/Nextbox will get an exclusive title next year.

At the moment it doesnt look that way, iwata said sega and nintendo have entered a partnership for the Sonic franchise. I would assume that means the series is now an exclusive to Nintendo.

But who knows, I think we need more elaboration on the subject

      • Solomon_Kano

Eh, the way it was worded, it didn’t exactly indicate that it extended beyond this title. I took it to be that they entered into a partnership to get this particular title exclusively.

Sega’s recent financial reports revealed that they’ve got a number of Playstation (7, equal to the number of titles in development for Wii U) and Xbox games (4) in the works for the upcoming fiscal year, so one of them is bound to be Sonic. And, in their current straits, I can’t imagine that they’d surrender their biggest moneymaker to any single platform — much less one in the Wii U’s position — for an extended period of time.

I think the scenario yuina describes is most likely: Lost World is exclusive to Nintendo’s platforms this year, while next year sees the release of a title on a broader range of platforms.

We’ll see. I’d like further elaboration by Nintendo and SEGA on the matter so we all know exactly what it is they mean lol

          • Solomon_Kano

Well, it’s been updated, so now they’ve clarified. Nintendo gets 3 exclusive Sonic games from the deal. Two were announced today, the 3rd is somewhere in the future.

So I guess we won’t be getting a PS360 Sonic next year, after all. Well, unless they do a different game for the other systems in addition to the 3rd exclusive.

Looks like Sonic will only be available on Nintendo platforms. I could be wrong though.

PS3 and 360 never got an Exclusive Sonic game

      • HeatPhoenix

Sonic Unleashed’s PS3/360 version which was pretty much the actual game and the Wii version a downport.

        • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

Wii version still outsold both PS3 and 360 version combined. It aslo Graphically Superior to the PS2 version. Better models, textures, lighting, animation, framerate and just about everything. Sonic sells better on Nintendo. This is fact. Reason why this is happening. Sega knows it.

  • XypherCode

Well Generations was exclusive to PS360 (excluding 3DS) so it’s understandable.

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

      Generation was on PC PS3 360 3DS

      • XypherCode

Uhh yeah forgot PC but yeah I’m saying only a Ninty console was left out.

    • new_tradition

Sorry, completely unrelated, but how did you italicize that word in your post?

  • Elvick

Well, my hype for a Sonic game is pretty much nullified for now.

Post updated with more details and high-res shot.

  • Adol Christin

I wonder if this partnership will make all future Sonic titles exclusive for Nintendo platforms.

    • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

3 titles is a bit too soon to get the franchise perma-exclusive. There is still money to be made on the other ones, this was just an opportune moment for both Sega/Nintendo in the meanwhile.

  • Namekaze_Minato

    Not on xbox or ps..nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
    oooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
    ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo…… :(

  • PrinceHeir

so will nintendo help with the development??

  • Claude

Sonic…exclusive to a Nintendo console? Why, I never!
But let’s be serious here. Sonic sells best on Nintendo platforms and has generally had better games when Sega narrows their focus, because otherwise they don’t know what the hell to do with him. And when they do get their act together (Generations), the game underperforms because they cut out the key figure (Wii). So, a collaboration that could put out Sonic games at Colors/Generations quality, and guarantee healthy sales? Sounds like a win/win to me.

    • Bec66

While I do mostly agree with you I have to ask was Generations a failure sales wise?

      • Claude

I don’t know if Sega considers it a failure but…the 3DS version of Generations outsold the PS3 and 360 versions combined. Actually, the Wii version of Colors outsold PS360 Gens as well.
Considering that Generations is a celebration of Sonic, that’s not great. Surprised they haven’t ported Generations to Wii U yet.

        • Bec66

Guess moving to Nintendo does make more sense when you consider that.

  • Willgaea

I hope they lost this world in a good game.

  • epy

If you were gaming back during the “Genesis does what Nintendon’t” era, this is freaking hilarious.

  • almostautumn

Good for Nintendo; they sealed the deal on a long dead Platformer!
Hedgehog and dull ass plumber can have a field day now; dead and tired ideas FTW!

  • MasterSensei

When I heard Sega was going to make a new Sonic game I was really hoping for Sonic Adventure 3 but I am still looking forward for this game.

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

He jumps onto another planet like SONIC CD. Lets hope this one is GOOD.
