PlayStation Network U.S. web store coming this month

Automatic PlayStation 3 downloads also planned.

Sony will launch a web version of the U.S. PlayStation Store later this month, Sony Network Entertainment COO Shawn Layden told CNET at CES in Las Vegas.

Last month, Sony launched a web version of the European storefront.

Acording to Layden, the webstore will eventually allow users to buy a game via their internet browser and have the content automatically downloaded to their PlayStation 3. At the present time, users can only make purchases, which they would have to download themselves by powering on their PlayStation 3 and accessing the PlayStation Store.

    Finally.
The redesigned store has some *cough~cough~ahem* “performance” issues on the PS3, to say the least.

      It’s a shame, because it’s sexy.

But then you have issues like:

      1) It takes like 40 seconds to open.
      2) It takes like a hundred steps to download something now.
      3) It takes like 10 seconds to close.
      4) Cursor movement (item selection, moving from one thing to the next thing, whatever you want to call it) feels slow and weighed down.

Fix those things and it’d be perfect.

The new storefront is much more promotion-based, which is a good thing for publishers and indies selling their games, but unfortunately, the nuances I listed have driven me away from the PlayStation Store rather than more towards it. I used to check the Store several times every few days just to browse around, maybe download a demo or game I missed, but now I rarely find myself visiting.

        Agree with this so much.

I love the new look of the store and think that along with dedicated game pages for each title, everything is more organized.

But the performance is AWFUL. It takes a million light years to load up and navigation is so choppy and laggy at time, it’s just…ugh.

I know it probably has something to do with the PS3′s limited RAM and the new store being more resource heavy (hell it has to itself as a completely separate app now) but I really hope to see performance fixes in the future.

Agreed also, lots of polishing to the system can be done but I definitely feel it’s a step in the right direction. And now with a web store, things should be a lot better especially in anticipation of PS4.

I do agree with Sal. The store is great, but the performance is so slow. Being able to access all of a game’s DLC from the game’s main page is great, but it takes so long to get through the store through to the checkout, that people are probably not buying as much as they would like to.

    Oh yesssss finally

I hate the new layout. Its not user friendly and the search feature leaves a little to be desired. Reminds me of Windows 8.

It’s for the web store only, I think. Not for the Playstaion store.

i Hope i can Download kingdom hearts birth by sleep, :(

That’s a pretty good move there, Sony. Should increase sales by a noticeable amount. It’s much easier to navigate the web than navigating the PS3. Will definitely use this when buying downloadable games in the future.

Finally. I liked the UK version of the web store. As I left for Tokyo in September I did not have any hands-on experience with the new PS-Store on PS3. The web-version is, however, very user-friendly. Always amazed how much PS3 and the online experience have changed since 2009. And every modification just by updating the firmware.

    Its about time!

They need an app next for both Android and Apple

I still wish they would let us choose between using the new store or the old store. The old store was simplistic, but I found it easier to use.

I feel like many things have updates like this these days. Everything might look more attractive, but at what cost? The performance seems to always suffer. I’m also not a fan of the huge icons all over the store.

I like smaller more slick looking designs and layouts. I don’t use big icons on my windows desktop for example. The biggest issue is all the annoying extra steps this update added for things on the store.

I think Sal mentioned most everything with his comment below. I still think the download list needs major work done to it. It’s a real pain in the ass to try and do just about anything with it. In fact, if you go to it under your account management, outside of the ps store — It loads up a hybrid looking version of the download list that resembles the old store and loads much quicker.

That’s what I would like! A more simplistic light weight version of the new store. Sorta like a hybrid of the old store and new store combined. I guess for now I’ll have to try and use this web version when possible.

this makes it easier for me.
when I buy a game I can go online and download the game.
Now I wonder if you can redeem codes to games you Pre-ordered.
Tales of Xillia will be one of them

NOw I can download the DLC to PS All Stars for Kat & Emett when it comes out. I can put it on my download list.
