The next Xbox is code-named Kryptos and the next PlayStation is code-named Thebes, according to a SemiAccurate source.
Kryptos, according to the site, will run on an AMD chip called Oban, which was scheduled for mass production before the end of 2012, but may have been delayed due to manufacturing problems. One source called the chip’s quality ‘painfully low’, which might have caused the delay.
Thebes is said to use an AMD CPU and GPU. Details on the chip were not provided by SemiAccurate, but ‘leaked’ details from November claim it is based on the AMD A10 APU series, which is a combined CPU an GPU, and is “derivative” of existing A10 hardware. According to the source, the chip, said to be 28nm part, will likely be manufactured at Global Foundries or IBM, and enter production after the next Xbox’s Oban chip—most likely around spring or fall 2014.
