Final Fantasy X HD is a high-definition remaster
No remake for you!
by [@salromano] at 11:12 AM EDT, February 5, 2012 .

When Square Enix announced Final Fantasy X HD at last year’s Tokyo Game Show, it wasn’t clarified whether the game was a full-on remake, or a high-definition remaster. Speaking at the Taipei Game Show, Square Enix’s Shinji Hashimoto cleared things up.

“The game is being developed like a high-definition remaster, but the visuals will look much better compared to the original,” he told Gamer.com.tw (via FF Reunion). “Please look forward to it!”

That should well debunk this, then.

Final Fantasy X HD will release for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita.

    This is a bit disappointing considering this game had a lot of points to touch up. The voice acting could’ve used a definite redo, and a bit of the CGI animating and whatnot.

    I’m so sad right now :(. This is disappointing, but it’s Final Fantasy X and I love this game.

      @captainhowdy: I feel the same way. I’m still going to buy it but it sounded so good, a remake of FFX (my favorite in the series), pity.

    I agree. It’s an amazing game, and being remade would make it look unbelievable graphically. Even on the PS2 it was still a beautiful game.

    I would have liked a remake, but an HD remastered release is still pretty awesome. It being on the PS3 and Vita is fantastic. They should add trophies as well.

    Well I’m happy either way. FFX is my second favorite FF game. If it were a straight up-res like RE4 HD then that will be fine by me. If they do extra work on upressing the textures then that’ll be even better.

    I didn’t expect all new models, VA, totally new graphics or what.

    If you guys remember there were 3 phases of character models. Flat, walking around the world models which were pretty low quality. Then they had cinematic non-pre-rendered models which were much higher quality than the base models, then they had the full pre-rendered CG character models.

    Maybe they will replace the lowest quality models with the higher poly cinematic models.

    Makes perfect sense because I didnt understand why they would remake X when majority of the world has been begging for VIII Remake!

      @FinalFantasy_fangirl: Remaking X would be a lot easier than remaking VII. However, I guess now that they voiced the characters of VII in Advent Children and Dissidia they wouldn’t have much more to do. I guess all that would need to be done would be to completely revamp the soundtrack and all the graphics.

        @lordshihan:

        Of course X would be easier but VII is the most wanted remake from SE period followed by Xenogears if I remember correctly Sal did a article on it long ago.

    I’m not surprised at all.

    Doing a remake would require more staff and more work, they can work on this as a remaster title without having to stop development on anything else.

    And yes, this isn’t FF7, but even releasing a remaster title of it would prove difficult. They would have to use or make a new engine either way. And crystal tools would prove problematic.

    The best chance we have for a FF7 remake currently lies with the new engine currently in development. The one Versus will likely be running on next time we see it.

    They really should have done the FF7 remake a few years ago, and release it on the PS2. Then, they could have done a remaster of it as well, just like they are doing with FFX.

    The problem now is just that new engine. If they finish it up and release Versus, perhaps we will finally get a Kingdom Hearts game that isn’t on a portable, and some kind of FF7 game on console.

    I will still pick up this remaster release of FFX though, I’m hoping if it sells good enough we might see other SE titles remastered.

    And not just PS2 games, but PSP games as well. Crisis Core and Birth by Sleep in 720p with trophies would be awesome!

      @Zero: They could make a HD FF VII with 2D backgrounds. I’m not saying it’s more likely, but I think it could work and it’s the method I would prefer and the one I would choose if I had the choice.

      They could use the FMV models for battles and the SD FMV models for exploration. I honestly think it would look pretty amazing and be perfect for PSVita.

        @rockman29:

        I would be just fine with that as well. You know the fanboys and about 95% of the media would not be ok with it though.

        They would eat it up and just spew venomous crap in the form of text.

        I can see it now… :( (Probably why it hasn’t happened yet.)

      @Zero: Versus is using a hybrid engine of the crystal engine and the limnous engine

        @KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler:

        Right, or something like that.

        Wikipedia- “On September 21, Nomura revealed that the game’s lighting will be done using Square Enix’s new Luminous Studio engine, while the gameplay mechanics will be done by an engine developed specifically for the game.”

        No telling how long this has been the case, but making a new engine takes time, and is hard work.

        Unfortunately that causes big delays for fans like us, that just want to play the game.

        And if they can’t even get Versus out, then chances are a FF7 remake is not even on the table currently. :(

        It’s the sad truth. As for Remaster titles, they don’t have to do much. I’m hoping FFX is the first of many to come.

    I hate to be the “I told you so” guy but…yeah, I’ve been saying this ever since this was announced lol. I’d want a remake but I’ve always said this was highly, highly unlikely. SE would have to put to use lots of resources they just can’t spend on right now, not on this economy, not when they have so many new projects underway.

    Expect a FF X remake in six, seven years from now perhaps. FF V, VI and…welll, VII (even tho I don’t personally want to) will have to be remade first :P

    I will not pay premium for a single HD remaster. So if this is a remaster then remaster XII and X2 and place all of them together in a disc. Throw in Dirge of the Cerberus as a bonus.
