Rumor: Next Xbox is Kryptos, PlayStation 4 is Thebes

Limited details on the chips that power them.

The next Xbox is code-named Kryptos and the next PlayStation is code-named Thebes, according to a SemiAccurate source.

Kryptos, according to the site, will run on an AMD chip called Oban, which was scheduled for mass production before the end of 2012, but may have been delayed due to manufacturing problems. One source called the chip’s quality ‘painfully low’, which might have caused the delay.

Thebes is said to use an AMD CPU and GPU. Details on the chip were not provided by SemiAccurate, but ‘leaked’ details from November claim it is based on the AMD A10 APU series, which is a combined CPU an GPU, and is “derivative” of existing A10 hardware. According to the source, the chip, said to be 28nm part, will likely be manufactured at Global Foundries or IBM, and enter production after the next Xbox’s Oban chip—most likely around spring or fall 2014.

    • Acidicsam

Yeah, I agree. This doesn’t seem true in the least.

    • KingNigma

      People thought this was true?

      • KingOptimusOrigins111

Yeah, why would they wait till 2014 when Microsoft Xbox 360 would 9 years old by 2014 and Sony PlayStation 3 would be 8 years old. Then the fact the a lot high quality multiplates and exclusives are releasing from January – May 2013 makes me think something going to happen at E3 in June. It just doesn’t add up and the fact that their rumored code names have change when most of the rumors are saying Durango and Orbis tells me this rumor is pure BS.

So many rumors flying around. I wonder if any of them are true.

  • I’m all for new consoles but c’mon…enough with the rumors already.

  • TimesTicking

Can’t Sony just call it PS4?
    Can’t Microsoft just call it…… 720? iono…

  • Bloodios

Hey guys, words from a reliable source is that both Sony’s and Microsoft’s next generation home consoles have an overheating-prevention mechanism that once triggered, will enable the systems to sprout wings and fly around in the sky until they have completely cooled down. The core concept, as stated by an engineer, is to effectively prevent hardware failure while providing a meaningful and entertaining experience.

      Would buy, day one.

    • Comment of the week material. Bravo! +1

(If we had a comment of the week that is…lol)

  • Leon Kiwi

I understand Sony is trying to lower the production cost by integrating both CPU and GPU into a single chip. Question is, can a single chip outperform a traditional cpu + discrete gpu in terms of raw power??

  • I call BS on this…

  • Its fake that date is to far off next gen consoles are expected at next year’s E3 by now both SONY and MS have what they need and are pretty much milking the PS3 and 360 for all they got left which is between this time and November of next year.

    • PS3 and 360 will still see some big games come out do like Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
