Sequel headed to Sony handheld in spring 2013.

The latest entry in Sega’s 7th Dragon series is 7th Dragon 2020 II for PSP, this week’s Famitsu reveals.

The sequel, due in spring 2013 for 6,279 yen, is set in the year 2021. In the character maker, a new “Idol” job will be available, and players can choose from over 40 voices.

A teaser site for the game was launched earlier this week.

Wasn’t the first one on DS? o_O

    • The original game, 7th Dragon was a DS title. The sub series 7th Dragon 2020(and now 2020-II) is PSP exclusive so far.

Stupid question: Did we get 7th Dragon 2020 over here? o_O

        • Nope, JPN only.

            • If it makes you feel a bit better, there a manga of the 1st game. Some of it are translated into english.

        • Kobracon

Nope. One of the main draws of the game was the insanely star-studded voice selection for the created characters. From Lelouch from Code Geass to Suzumiya Haruhi, the voice cast was insanely awesome. Also Hatsune Miku is an actual character, so licencing issues :/

          • DarthBrian

Hatsune Miku is a SEGA character and this is a SEGA game so I doubt licensing issues were a problem with her. :p

            • Kobracon

Oh really? Thought it was Vocaloid….or is all Vocaloid all owned by SEGA?

    Superior PSP strikes again, too!

  • MrKappa

Really… PSP? Japan really has a problem with moving on. The Vita is gonna be a big failure for about 3 or so more years until they learn to move on.

    • Kazziyan

Safer to release on a well-established platform.

      • DrForbidden

Well, yes, it’s safer for Sega, but it’s not good news for Sony. While downloaded PSP titles will work for the Vita, there’s still plenty of lost sales for the physical copies. I think the issue here isn’t that Sega wants to play safe, but that they want to re-use assets from 7th Dragon 2020. Minimal work for maximal payoff.

I’ll wait for more information before commiting to this game. If it’s just going to be the same character models and classes with a couple of new environments and dragons, it may not be worth the asking price even if the story is new.

        • Kazziyan

I don’t consider it an issue, lol. I have both systems. But I think it’s clear more profit for SEGA will be on the PSP and they need that profit.

They can reuse assets all they like, It’s not uncommon and the first game was great with the adorable models. If it’s that and includes more of them- I’ll be a happy camper as sure many others will be. That’s just my take on it though.

          • DrForbidden

Speaking for myself, Sega needs to at least redesign the models with new outfits, etc. and add more characters and classes in addition to the environment and bosses before I’ll consider buying this.

Knowing Sega, however, that’s  pretty slim chance. Akiyama Shun has been wearing the same suit for 3 years now despite being incredibly wealthy (or at least being so talented that he can make billions in a matter of months). 0_o

            • Kazziyan

Idol class is all you need!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D It’s still early so there’s hope! They can redesign the models as long as they are as cute as before. xD

              Loool It’s an amazing suit!

      • MrKappa

It’s like DrForbidden said but these companies have to realize that these systems can’t succeed without their help. It reminds me of how reluctant Japan was to move from PS2 to PS3, it was the exact same circumstances. So instead they moved from the PS2 to the PSP.

At the end of the day I’m not saying the game will be bad or not worth it but it would be nice to see companies trying to utilize the newer and stronger system.

I don’t think it’s a problem with moving on. You have to remember that the Vita install base is low in Japan, and the developers probably don’t want to take risks. The psp is cheaper to develop on, too. I think we’ll need a big title like Final Fantasy or Monster Hunter if we want to see more Vita games, sadly.

    • you have a big problem in you…

  • Sony needz ta make incentivez fer makin’ gamez for da Vita over da PSP.

  • Kobracon

*SQUEEEE* loved the first 2020, can’t wait to see the voice cast for the sequel. I pray to GOD for a Tomokazu Seki, Norio Wakamoto or even Nobuyuki Hiyama.

  • DrForbidden

For those interested in this game, note that amiami is already taking pre-orders:
The page shows additional art and reveals that there are more characters/classes on offer. Looks like an unlockable nekomimi character…
    Damn. Must… fight… temptation!!!

  • PrinceHeir

    interesting :D

  • it’s because they don’t have enogh time to enhance the graphics of the game… and besides… why do you always argue… are you the one who makes the game?
