PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita are getting some classic role-playing game love in the form of Dragon Fantasy Book II next year.
Developed by Muteki Corporation, the sequel to the PC, Mac, and iOS title is being backed by Sony Computer Entertainment America’s Pub Fund program, which supported the development of titles such as Tales from Space: About A Blob and Guacamelee!
Dragon Fantasy Book II combines three stories into “one massive sequel,” according to Muteki CEO Bryan Sawler, and follows a more naturally flowing story. It uses “Mode7,” a special video mode that “let the very 2D hardware make eye-popping ‘3D’ effects,” which is used during raveling scenes and later battle scenes. It also boasts a new battle system built from teh ground up, which are set in the same world the player lurks, monsters lurking around every corner. During battle, you’ll see a status screen, menu bbar, and “quirky” text descriptions from the first game, now with “fully animated attacks” and “highly effect-driven magic spells.”
Up to four players will be able to play together, each a different party member in player one’s party. Each person will be able to explore the environment’s surrounding areas on their own, and participate in separate battles. If they desire, the other players can jump in and join someone’s battle at any time. The game will also include a Coliseum mode, which allows players form a mixed party of their own party members and those of their friends to do battle for “glorious prizes and honor.”
Find below a summary of the story, courtesy of Sawler:
As the story begins, the Imperial Armada is closing in on our heroes. It’s not quite clear to them yet why the empire is pursuing them, but they’ll learn soon enough. As they head further and further into the southlands, our heroes will be split up into three teams (representing the original three chapters we’d planned to do episodically), with each discovering important secrets about the war between the Kingdom of Tundaria and the Empire of Sandheim. We’ll see what’s happened in Westeria in our heroes absence! And finally, we’ll learn a little bit about where the Dark Lord came from, how the Woodsman got to be so knowledgeable about things, and just what that purple talisman is all about.
If you’re attending the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle this weekend, you can stop by Booth #870 and check the game out for yourself.
