Commenting Guidelines enacted

For every word you don't read, we shed one tear.

Hello, Gematsu community!

In case you haven’t already noticed (we hope you have, because the link has its own box above the comments section), we’ve today enacted a set of guidelines for participating in the comments on Gematsu. After recent, frankly shameful happenings, discussion-wise, I sat down with community moderators Zero and FaithlessMr to write up the code. And we’re all pretty happy with how it’s turned out.

Give the guidelines a read here. As for that “Open Forum” mentioned in point three, they will be published every Wednesday at noon. So please hold off on any off-topic discussion until then. From then on, the Open Forum can be used as your weekly off-topic area until the next is published.

And of course, let’s continue to work together to make Gematsu a strong community.

Thanks, everyone!

Thank’s for all hard work Gematsu team.

  • Locksus

Huge thanks to Sal, Zero and Faithless for taking the time and write it!
Hopefully this’ll help to keep the comments section free of flaming and other stupid discussions.

  • i love Gematsu More than Gamespot <3

  • Revorse

If it’s alright to ask, what exactly where the “shameful happenings?”

  • bebestorm117

Excellent guidelines I can tell you guys put alot thought into it and I appreciate your hard work. Im not making fun of anyone but when I saw port begging it made me laugh a little its perfect name.

  • Anime101210

Great guidelines, simple and easy for everyone to understand. Now lets hope that they are followed.

  • ekka4shiki

Great guidelines, also this reminds me of …

“Rules do not exist to bind you, they exist so you may know your freedoms”
    – Nier

  • Thanks for the support everyone!

Now that the guidelines are live, please remember to apply the guidelines to what you post.

We know this is a new thing, and a bit of a transition has to occur. In the end, this is going to be beneficial to everyone.

As for the Open Forum, I hope everyone is excited about it! We all like to go off topic now and then, and the Open Forum is going to give us a great place to do that.

Try and remember to post off topic stuff in the Open Forum. We don’t want people to not post, we just want the posts to be in the right place. :)

And keep in mind, we will need people to help get the ball rolling in the Open Forum. Feel free to jump right in and start up a conversation when it goes live.

I’m looking forward to reading and discussing some of the open comments.

(Here is a little early tip. If you want to try and bring someone into your conversation. Try using the @ key. When you type it, a list should appear with clickable user names.)

  • Aldridge517

Whoever it was that fucked up and made them write these guidelines I just want you to know that this is why we can’t ever have nothing! Lol

    • The guidelines are meant to be a good thing, Aldridge! :D

    • Adam Meadows

Nothing’s really changed except that now the rules are written down, as opposed to some ethereal list of expectations. :D

If a person asks me what my fave game is like what happened in a recent topic am I to now tell them they are off topic and that I can’t discuss it per the new guidelines?

That seems so counterproductive to building a friendly community where gamers gather to discuss games.

Btw, that conversation turned out great and involved 4 or 5 members of this community including myself.

I’m thinkin under this new rule we will go back to comment sections under articles being a whopping 3 comments strong on a good day just like it was back when this site was known as Scrawlfx.

Just a couple of guys and the tumbleweeds. That open forum is likely gonna blow up and be the inly place people gather.

    • I don’t have any problem with that. So long as the conversation is following all the other guidelines closely, I think we can let that slide. We want those friendly discussions to occur.

While it would be best if they were in the open forum, I’m fully aware that is not always going to happen. And like I said, I’m not going to jump in and say – stop having this fun conversation.

As for keeping comments going on articles outside of the open forum. That is something the community will just have to work at. If we can grow the community more, hopefully that won’t happen very much.

I also wanted to say, please (Everyone) leave feedback. Good or bad. I believe constructive criticism is a very good thing.

    • FaithlessMr

I don’t personally think that will kill the activity, it will simply make so that everything’s where it belongs to.

I participate in other websites and foruns where you can’t go offtopic, and when that happens we do exactly as you say, as soon as we see things are going off topic we ask the person we’re talking with to move our convo to the conversation/open thread and follow it up from there. Besides, other websites are following this “open thread” model, and it has been working great for them.

So can I comment again because the guideline you guys made (which is great by the way) is the reasons why I stop commenting on this site just saying not trying to point fingers or call anybody out or anything.

    • Glad to have you back, sir whose name is comprised of two of my favorite game series.

      • KingdomPersona

Gald to be back :) well I wasn’t really gone I was still on the site but was not commenting :P and hell yeah love me some kingdom hearts and persona and I still need to play persona 4 before I get the Arena :P

    • Welcome back! :)

      • KingdomPersona

        Thanks :)

    • FaithlessMr

Ahah, awesome! Glad to have you back. I was right to assume the number of fanboyism and unnecessary discussions were indeed chasing away good posters and nice participants who’d otherwise be more active :)

      • KingdomPersona

Yep that why I stop commenting hopefully people will follow these guidelines and thanks :)

  • zakou

I wish you luck, this is a site I visit very often, the amount of news and updates is always top.

However I sometimes cannot put up with fanboys and speak my mind.

With that said I hope that this site will never be one-sided, I want it to remain “open” to everything, in that regard also meaning open to both negative and positive discussions.

    • We don’t want anything to be one-sided either. You can criticize something you don’t like. Just discuss it maturely.

The Open Forum was created with the “open” discussion in mind. You can post whatever you want to discuss.

  • RyougaZell

I liked what I saw. I just think that regarding the respect it should apply also to fellow readers. Like when you are told, by fellow members, to shut up and be thankful for example

  • Devoted

Hey guys! I’m usually more of a lurker, but I think it’s necessary to give praise where it’s due: congrats to Sal, Zero and Faithless for this. The guidelines are simple and clear, while being broad enough that they won’t -I hope- hinder our growth as a community but, instead, help it…

Been around for awhile and I hope to see this great community grow even more.

    • Thanks! Keep on posting comments here on Gematsu.

I lurk often myself, but I’d love to see all of our lurkers posts more often. Once again, thanks for supporting Gematsu, Devoted.

    • FaithlessMr

If I’m here today, it is mostly because of you, and for that, I say thanks, my friend ;) Also, do post more often, you lurker son of a submariner you! :D

  • Adam Meadows

I wanted the guidelines to demand that you guys give us free food. Sal rejected it :(

    • Let’s go on strike until it happens! (lol)

  • PrinceHeir

hell yeah thanks for the write up Sal :D

im sure the mods Zero and FaithlessMr. will do their very best to monitor us ^^

    • FaithlessMr

Thanks! I’ll do my best for everyone :)

  • KingOptimusOrigins111

    I accept these guidelines.

  • whiteferrero

aw. i never really “think” before i post anything. And I like to make off-topic comments as well. the new rules shake the very fiber of my being!
    ┻━┻ ︵ヽ(`Д´)ノ︵ ┻━┻
but i’ll try my best anyway. i like this site.

    • You have been a regular here for a while. I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Just be you and don’t talk about Sal’s “weekend” job and you will be fine. ^^

Like I said below – So long as the conversation is following all the other guidelines closely, I think we can let relevant off topic conversations slide. We want those friendly discussions to occur.

      • whiteferrero

Sal has a “weekend” job? O.o

        • Better not tell anyone about it! (I’m just kidding, lol)

  • FaithlessMr

So glad to see the commenting guidelines are now online! Hopefully with these new rules enacted, we can have an even friendlier and more organized, cleaner community. You don’t even have to read through a chunk of text, these are like five little rules of thumb you just keep with you at all times and always remember by whenever you wish to post and participate in this growing community.

Thanks for the support everyone :)
