Producer's ill health behind the departure.

Final Fantasy XI producer Hiromichi Tanaka will be departing Square Enix, he announced at Vana Fest 2012.

Citing ill health, Tanaka will finish work after the event, which took place this weekend.

As well as his work on the massively multiplayer games Final Fantasy XI and XIV, the producer also worked on Final Fantasy I, II and III – as well as contributing to Xenogears and Chrono Cross.

Akihiko Matsui, battle planner for Final Fantasy XIV, is set to take over Tanaka’s position on Final Fantasy XI. He will work on both titles simultaneously.

Pictures of Tanaka at the event can be seen on Famitsu’s website.

Thanks, Andriasang.

Health is the most important thing, thanks for the games :)

I’m sure it’s for the best. Good luck to him with his health. I’m sure being producer of such a popular MMO isn’t exactly a peachy lifestyle.

I hope his health improves. The job might have resulted in his health getting bad. Tanaka, was more or less the one everyone blamed for FFXIV. (Which was really unfair.)

He is responsible for helping make FFXI the hit that it is today, for that I will always respect Tanaka. (So does Square-Enix. President Wada recently revealed that 11 is the most profitable Final Fantasy ever.)

I can only imagine what his version of XIV would have been, if he was allowed the time to really finish the game.

This is the H. Tanaka I see in the opening credits every time I turn on Secret of Mana right? Whoa..

Wow, he really is a great producer then – one of the greats of gaming.

Hope he gets well soon. Thank you for your contribution to gaming, Hiromichi Tanaka.

Being in poor health is a good enough reason to quit. I wonder if maybe he has cancer?
