tri-Ace's new physically-based rendering.

Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile developer tri-Ace is showing off its latest physically-based rendering technology. The Tokyo-based developer today launched a new section on its “Research and Development Department” website, where they released a video of their new technology in motion, complete with 720p screen captures.

The demo is running in real-time on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, at a steady 30Hz in 720p. It uses “real-time lighting and shadowing”, emphasizing that does not utilize baked light maps. Its key features are “physically-based shading models, physically-based lighting and image-based global illumination”.

The technology can be read about more in-depth here. See it in action below. Take notice of the Fayt and Edge action figure and poster cameos, characters from Star Ocean: Till The End of Time and Star Ocean: The Last Hope, respectively. This ‘tech demo’ looks like it can be a trailer for a new Star Ocean, itself, which wouldn’t be highly unlikely.

    Thats insanely gorgeous

Oh, how I love cameos! The demo is really beautiful. I see an improvement on the hairs, specifically the female. I was always distracted by how they seemed in Resonance of Fate. If this is the new Star Ocean game, I’ll miss the anime-like features the previous Star Ocean games had.

  • I could watch this clip all night.

The mere fact that this could be tri-Ace’s vision for the next Star Ocean excites me. I enjoyed Star Ocean: The Last Hope, but it wasn’t anywhere near perfect. As the series is one of my favorite video game franchises, I demand better.

This technical demonstration could be a great evolution for the Star Ocean franchise. Its character design takes a more realistic approach to the series’ otherwise anime-esque design. Edge, Reimi, and company from The Last Hope clearly illustrate my point. The nameless man and his elven friend look much more realistic – like something out of Mass Effect.

I agree. I just hope this also helps rid some of the near game-killing bugs from previous Tri-Ace games. At least, if it’s there I always seem to be the one to get them.

From a western gamer: This is INCREDIBLE. I love TRI-ACE. PS3/360 VALKYRIE PROFILE please (with a JAPANESE VOICE TRACK OPTION)!

    • KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler

Quit doing the “from a western gamer”thing, its annoying.

      • FAUNA

People that complain about things online are annoying…

      • AdamBoy64

It’s funny because you’re saying what we’re all thinking.

  • legendarydynasty1992

Definitely got my attention. Looks great. I am glad that the character models dont look like they lack detail /emotion, and doll-like in SO4.

  • EinherjarUrashima

Any tri-Ace news is a welcome sight. I seriously hope we hear something about a new project, whether it be Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean, or even a new IP this year.

Maybe this is a ramp up for an E3 announcement, perhaps? One can only hope. :P

On a side note, I don’t think I can listen to any variation of “Star Ocean Forever” without getting goosebumps.

  • Wow, now that is the kind of thing I like to see!

Star Ocean is one of my all time favourite series and honestly this makes me very excited. It looks astonishing to me. Tri-Ace usually end up making games I fall in love with anyway.

  • sheppard00

That’s pretty amazing, now we want real results in a game please. I’m hoping the best this last years of gen and without excuses.

Soo, this is what tri-ace was doing all these years? working on there game engine? Because they have been missing in action for a while.

Other than that, this is amazing. This could be tri-aces vision of there next game.

    • JTX09

They haven’t been missing in action. They came out with Resonance of Fate in 2010.

  • RyougaZell

I hope they use this engine for the next Star Ocean. The Last Hope had a great gameplay with terrible plot… but I still managed to enjoy it.

Just don’t give console exclusivity for a year to any console. Just release the game on both from the start.

I love all of TRI-ACE’s games, including INFINITE UNDISCOVERY, STAR OCEAN: A LAST HOPE, & RESONANCE OF FATE. They just need to be in Japanese…

  • I must’ve watched this clip like 30 times, already.

  • Oh wow, that’s incredible!

  • AdamBoy64

This does look great. However, all tech demos always do.
What they do with it will be interesting.

  • TheDarkCloud

wow, looks great. No doubt they are making a new star ocean. Thats why the figures appear. And apparently this new game will be more realistic than the others games. Hopefully we hear some news very soon!

    Let’s go Tri Ace!

  • Revorse

I’m really not feeling the direction of the character desing, but it still looks good.

  • Rafi

Pretty goddamn visual !, well now Battlefield 3 and Crysis 2 graphic just meh……..

With this engine, tri-Ace can compete with Unreal Engine 3, Cry Engine 3, ID Tech 5, and the badass Frostbite 2….

Maybe tri-Ace will make new Star Ocean ?

  • Though the tri-Ace page states ” This video is not related to our developing titles at all,” I can’t help but feel that’s a lie.

It’s been four days and I’ve still been watching this, at the same time hoping a Star Ocean 5 announcement arrives soon. I’m so sad.

    • I’ve been watching it multiple times a day since it was first posted. Tri-Ace better be announcing at E3!!
