Capcom‘s sent out the official announcement for Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, this morning, confirming earlier reports of the game’s reveal.
A “collaboration” between Capcom and SOCOM: Confrontation developer Slant Six Games, Operation Raccoon City is a “true third person team based shooter experience” set for release across PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC this Winter. It will “take the series in a completely new direction” and offer a gameplay style “yet to be seen from the franchise.”
Operation Raccoon City is set in the familiar Raccoon City, September 1998, reinterpreting the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. After the Umbrella facility’s T-virus outbreak, Umbrella sends out an “elite team” into the streets of Raccoon City to cover up the evidence and “eliminate” all survivors. Overhearing their intentions, the United States government sends out their own team to uncover any evidence of the T-virus outbreak and Umbrella’s actions. As a Umbrella Security Services soldier, players can play alone or in four-player co-op against the zombies and competing squads lurking Raccoon City.
Players will be able to rewrite history with the appearance of classic Resident Evil characters in Operation Raccoon City. Leon S. Kennedy, star of Resident Evil 4, is a rookie police officer in Raccoon City at the time and is on your hit list to eliminate. Killing him will change the course of Resident Evil history. However, as a member of the U.S. government’s team, your job would be to make sure he doesn’t die.
Other than four-player co-op, Operation Raccoon City will boast “a number” of competitive online modes. While Capcom doesn’t go into detail, they promise that each mode will provide a “unique gaming experience” thanks to three-way combat between the Umbrella Security Service, the U.S. Special Ops and the zombies and Bio-Organic Weapons threat.
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is out this Winter for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Exclusive coverage of the game can be found in the upcoming issues of Official Xbox Magazine, PlayStation: The Official Magazine, GamePro, GameReactor and PSM.
