Ready At Dawn: NGP has potential to “redefine” portable gaming

Ready At Dawn, developer of PSP’s two God of War games, as well as Jak spin-off Daxter, has taken the opportunity at this past week’s DICE Summit to praise Sony’s upcoming handheld, the NGP.

“I have a smile on my face whenever we talk about the NGP because I think overall that console has the potential to really define what portable gaming is,” creative director Ru Weerasuriya said on stage, after receiving an award for God of War: Ghost of Sparta.

“You know, we did that also with the PS3 and all that, but the NGP — not only with the touch screen capability, but the screen, and just the capacity of actually making a game that’s probably better than PS3 games that you can make right now — for me, it’s like the thing. For portable gaming I don’t think there’s anything else in the future.”

Regarding Weerasuriya’s last comment, other developers have already begun speculation that NGP and 3DS are the last generation of handhelds. Only time can prove that prediction, though.

I think the NGP is one sexy beast; looking forward to what developers are going to do with some of the tech.

Those are the kind of predictions that we look back on in 20 years or so and laugh at what people were thinking. Kind of like when the commissioner of the U.S. patent office during 1899 said “everything that could be invented has been invented.”

    A really poor article

“Regarding Weerasuriya’s last comment, analysts and developers alike have already begun speculation that NGP and 3DS are the last generation of handhelds. Only time can prove that prediction, though.”

Here are the real facts. Only 1 developer has said that, and that developer happens to be in apples pocket. And not 1 analyst has said that.

Dedicated handhelds are number 1 in each market right now.

    • I appreciate you pointing this out, Stealth, but there’s no need to jump on the negativity train and call the article “really poor”. There’s actually reason behind this mishap.

As you’ve quoted, I originally wrote the article with “analysts and developers alike have already begun speculation…” in its body. Before publishing, I Google-searched for the analyst bit, as I could’ve sworn I remembered seeing it somewhere. Alas, I was wrong, and did not find anything.

So I replaced that bit with: “other developers have already begun speculation…” And of course, at that moment, Firefox 4 decides to crash on me. Thank heavens for Session Restore, though, which brought back the post page and all of its contents. Or so I thought. So I hit publish and called it a day.

If you hadn’t already guessed, Session Restore seems to have brought back my original wording rather than my post-Google search wording. It’s since been fixed.

Next time, maybe try and point it out nicely? “Hey Sal, there seems to be a mix up in this bit.” “Oh, okay. Thanks for pointing that out!” I work very hard to maintain this blog and keep it in tip-top shape, so please, help me help you — positively.

sorry for being harsh but the dedicated handhelds are getting a bad rap for basically nothing. They are number 1, outselling consoles and have never been more popular.

Only 1 developer has ever said anythign about the end of portables and that company is in microsofts stable.

Only 1. You should really get rid of that statement because its false

I dont see how this has anything to do giving handhelds a bad rap.

I also dont understand your statements sir. First you said theyre in Apple’s pocket, then in Microsoft’s stable? What are you talking about exactly?

And it wouldn’t be only 1. It would be 2. Ready at Dawn says it right there in the article.

sorry I mistyped its still apple

And they were talking in terms of graphics probably…….

whats the point of consoles when pc’s are better in every way

            • AdamBoy64

I was kind of with you until this unjustified fanboy comment came along.

              • stealth20k

There are no fanboy comments fromme. I own basically every console from the last 20 years
